Upcoming Tomb Raider RPG shows more unified Lara Croft for leaked “open-world” game

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve witnessed Lara Croft grow from a pixelated wonder to a modern icon. The announcement of a Tomb Raider RPG has me buzzing like a swarm of ancient artifacts hidden deep within the crypts of Chanos!

One of the most enduring video game franchises ever created is Tomb Raider, which has been a resounding success since its initial release in 1996. The character of Lara Croft has become one of the most recognized figures in gaming history. After a six-year hiatus for major adventures, it’s been confirmed that development is underway on a new game. In 2025, players can expect a Tomb Raider RPG to be released, and previews suggest that the game will feature a more unified version of Lara Croft, as well as an “open-world” setting in India, according to recent leaks.

Even though it’s been three years since the launch of Tomb Raider: Shadow, Lara Croft has kept herself quite occupied by making appearances in various video games. She’s starred in Call of Duty and Fortnite, she’s also featured in Magic The Gathering, and more recently, she’s taken on a survivor role in Dead By Daylight. Furthermore, a Netflix anime series featuring Lara Croft is scheduled for release in October.

While all the previous collaborations were terrific, it seems that fans are mainly eager for a fresh Tomb Raider game, instead of more partnerships. Luckily, a new game is currently being developed, offering another immersive experience with the iconic character, Lara Croft, in an upcoming RPG setting.

New Tomb Raider RPG shows more unified Lara Croft artwork

In early 2025, a fresh Tomb Raider-themed role-playing board game called “The Crypt of Chanos” is set to debut. This exciting new addition has recently been added to Kickstarter, allowing you the opportunity to receive updates upon its launch. Simply sign up for notifications!

The intrigue lies not just in the novelty of the new board game, but also in the artwork, which offers a fresh perspective on the harmonious portrayal of Lara Croft, a character who has been featured prominently in partnerships with Call of Duty and Magic: The Gathering. Interestingly, Crystal Dynamics recently unveiled this united image of Lara Croft for her upcoming video game, aligning well with the board game and her depictions in CoD and MTG.

Some individuals voiced their disagreement with the “unified vision” depicted in the following, leading to developers of the forthcoming new game to explain that the presented image does not align with the ultimate design for Lara Croft (as reported by GamesRadar).

It appears that the “unified vision” of the design, although not necessarily the final version, is likely to closely resemble the character as portrayed in video game collaborations and the 2025 Tomb Raider RPG cover art. There might be some variations in her face, but it’s highly probable that she will be armed with dual pistols again, along with cargo shorts, a tank top, and her iconic braid.

Crystal Dynamics is currently developing a brand-new Tomb Raider AAA game, powered by Unreal Engine 5, with Amazon Games set to publish it. Here’s what we’ve confirmed so far: The game picks up after the events of Tomb Raider Underworld, and it adheres to the continuity established in Tomb Raider (2013) through Shadow as Lara Croft’s official origin story.

Regarding leaks, TikTok-based news source Thescooper previously revealed in May that the upcoming game will be an open-world title set in India. The narrative apparently revolves around a catastrophic natural event uncovering the remnants and artifacts of Emperor Ashoka in Northern India. This leads Lara to compete against a Raiders’ Society and other adversaries for these potent relics.

Apart from briefly outlining the main storyline, vthescooper added that this adventure will showcase expansive landscapes, allow players to freely ride motorcycles and use parachutes, as well as employ standard Lara Croft navigation techniques to move freely across a large map and its obstacles without restrictions.

The upcoming TOMB RAIDER installment will offer an expansive open-world setting in India, allowing players to roam freely using various vehicles such as motorcycles and parachutes, along with Lara’s signature movement techniques, throughout the vast landscapes and overcoming numerous obstacles.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, the rumors swirling around from vthescooper haven’t been officially verified yet. The one thing we can confirm for sure is that the upcoming game will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and features a unified Lara Croft following Tomb Raider Underworld. What’s more, this new adventure is set to be published by Amazon Games. So, while I’m keeping my fingers crossed, I’ll wait for the official word before getting too excited!

While it’s yet to be officially announced if a reveal will occur this year, enthusiasts are optimistic that they might get a sneak peek around Tomb Raider’s anniversary in October. Alternatively, fans are also hopeful that the teaser could be unveiled at this year’s Game Awards ceremony.
