Elden Ring fans have just discovered a third, hidden difficulty after the DLC

As an ardent Elden Ring enthusiast with countless hours lost in its labyrinthine world, I can’t help but feel like I’ve stumbled upon a secret society of hardcore gamers who have uncovered the game’s hidden depths. This latest revelation about a third difficulty level, DLC+, is nothing short of mind-blowing!

As a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that Elden Ring is the game where new discoveries are still being made, even weeks and years after its release. And guess what? The fan community has recently unearthed a hidden difficulty level – something beyond New Game Plus – exclusively in Shadow of the Erdtree.

After discovering an uncommon characteristic on Fextralife, referred to as DLC+, which I didn’t see mentioned elsewhere online, I was curious to check if it truly existed. Indeed, it does!

In a new twist, the Final Liberation Chronicles (FLC) now features an adjustment in challenge level if you’ve previously defeated the DLC’s final boss during a Normal Game Cycle (NG). This modification amplifies enemy attack power, and according to some players, also their health, although I haven’t personally verified this. Consequently, gamers embarking on the DLC for the first time in New Game Plus (NG+) will discover it significantly less challenging compared to those revisiting it for a second time under similar circumstances.

To verify this, the original user managed to reach the main game’s final boss, made a copy of their save data, and defeated the DLC boss on only one of the copies. Upon advancing both saves into the New Game Plus mode, they compared the damage differences between them. Shockingly, after receiving just one hit from Messmer’s initial attack, they observed that the save file where the DLC boss was defeated had almost 200 more points of damage.

Spleenczar makes a reasonable observation concerning speedruns and obstacles: “When a speedrun involves NG+ or higher difficulty, it’s crucial to disclose whether DLC+ is being used because the alteration in damage can completely transform the run.”

FromSoftware often incorporates a secret, ultra-difficult mode that’s never explicitly revealed within the game itself. It’s quite intriguing how players uncover these hidden challenges through their own experimentation and tinkering.

To unlock the third difficulty level, referred to as DLC+, you first need to complete both the main game and the downloadable content. In other words, if you’ve conquered them both, you’re ready to go! Upon your return to The Lands Between, you’ll encounter tougher enemies than ever before, while simultaneously dealing less damage yourself. It’s a classic FromSoftware challenge!
