One Piece Odyssey on Switch is a great way to celebrate the 25th anniversary

As a long-time fan who’s been sailing with Luffy since high school, I can wholeheartedly say that One Piece Odyssey’s Switch port is a testament to the power of perseverance and the love for this iconic series. It’s like finding a hidden treasure map in your old pirate chest!

Today, One Piece has achieved great popularity beyond Japan, a journey that took quite some time. The idea of seeing Monkey D. Luffy appearing in baseball stadiums sounds unbelievable to me, given I’ve been reading Eiichiro Oda’s swashbuckling pirate manga series since high school. What made it even more astonishing was learning that One Piece was already several years old when I first discovered it! I couldn’t fathom the fact that the series started as early as 1997, only a few years after the original Dragon Ball manga run concluded (and before it gained worldwide fame). Now, One Piece is recognized as one of the most successful and popular manga and anime franchises ever. However, its recognition in the western world was quite recent, though 4kids Entertainment played a role in it.

Okay, maybe it was a lot 4kids’ fault.

As a hardcore fan of One Piece since its early days, I can confidently say that 2024 marks a significant milestone for the beloved manga and anime series as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. My journey with One Piece has been nothing short of extraordinary, and it’s fascinating to see how the franchise has expanded beyond the realm of comic books and TV shows into the gaming world.

As a passionate One Piece fan and gamer, I was excitedly anticipating the anniversary project, One Piece Odyssey, which was supposed to drop later this year. However, it seems they’ve pulled off an early release, and while I’m thrilled about getting my hands on it sooner, there’s only so much a gaming enthusiast can ask for in such a short span. The latest movie, One Piece Film: Red, has just graced our screens, making another game release too soon.

The Switch is hanging by a thread, with its successor on the horizon, and it’s worth noting that it was already outdated when initially released. We’ve moved past the days of pleading for ports, as either gamers have received their desired titles (like Persona 5) or encountered too many issues (such as WWE 2K, Mortal Kombat 1, FIFA). Many multiplatform games struggle to maintain a steady frame rate on Switch, and even exclusive titles (such as Breath of the Wild, Shin Megami Tensei V) have noticeable performance issues that can only be resolved through emulation. This leads to its own set of challenges, some of which are still causing problems for gamers today. However, there are excellent ports available on Switch too! Games like DOOM, NieR: Automata, Dark Souls, and Dragon Quest XI are testament to the impressive technology behind these successful adaptations.

After spending some time with One Piece Odyssey on Switch, it’s safe to say this is one of the good ones. Great, even! I also have the game on PC, and I think I actually prefer playing it on Switch! There are obvious compromises, of course. The resolution is a little fuzzy, and the frame rate has no ambitions beyond 30 frames per second. But it’s stable, sturdy, and responsive. The biggest problems I have with underbaked Switch ports involve sluggishness and instability, which hurt far more than a dialed-down resolution. And since Odyssey is a slow-paced game anyway, the only difference that’s immediately noticeable is image clarity. And in some ways, this trade off makes playing One Piece Odyssey on my Switch OLED more appealing than on my Steam Deck or ROG Ally. Getting a solid, stable experience on those devices requires some tinkering, and you end up with compromises that aren’t too far off from playing on Switch anyway. Here, it just works.

As a longtime fan of One Piece who’s always on the go, I must say this news about the new port of One Piece Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch is simply fantastic! Being able to immerse myself in the vibrant world of One Piece, with its outlandish monster designs and action-packed combat, right from the comfort of my own home or on the move is an absolute dream come true.
