Sirens limited series on Netflix: Everything we know so far

As a dedicated gamer and avid consumer of all things entertainment, I can’t help but be excited about the latest announcement from Netflix regarding their upcoming limited series, “Sirens.” With a background in both gaming and binge-watching, I’ve grown accustomed to the thrill of discovering new and innovative stories, and this one seems to check all the boxes.

Over the last few years, Netflix has been generating a lot of buzz with its original limited series, often ending up as some of the most viewed and discussed shows of the year. Not only that, but many of these series garner multiple Emmy nominations. In terms of limited series, Netflix doesn’t seem to be letting up, as they have already announced their next “Sirens“.

Back in February 2024, I was thrilled to hear that Netflix was teaming up with Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyCap, to create a new dark comedy series called “Sirens.” This announcement came as a delightful surprise for me since Molly Smith Metzler, the Emmy-nominated creator of my beloved Netflix miniseries “Maid,” would be leading the writing team. It’s her first project with Netflix since the release of “Maid” in 2021 and the announcement of her overall deal with the streaming service in 2022. And to make it even more exciting, LuckyChap, which also produced “Maid,” would be involved once again!

As an avid gamer and soon-to-be binge-watcher, I’m thrilled to share that the anticipation for “Sirens” is reaching new heights! This limited series is poised to captivate audiences worldwide with its engaging storyline and a cast brimming with star power. The hype surrounding this production is palpable, and I can hardly contain my excitement for every tantalizing detail that’s been released so far.

Sirens synopsis, cast, and updates

Instead of sticking to the painfully authentic storyline of “Maid,” Smith Metzler’s latest mini-series is based on her 2011 play, “Elemeno Pea,” which she wrote while attending The Juilliard School. According to Variety, this production made its debut back then.

In the show, the dynamic between a high-society figure and her fresh hire evolves in a manner reminiscent of cult behavior, reaching its peak during a weekend at her lavish oceanfront villa. The concerns of her sibling are further complicated by the socialite, suggesting an escalation of tension as if they were engaged in some sort of competition.

Here’s the official synopsis of Sirens via Netflix’s press release:

Devon thinks her sister Simone has a really creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell. Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say WTF, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Told over the course of one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.

On July 9th, Smith Metzler took to Instagram to share exciting news: filming for the new project had commenced in New York. Alongside a picture of the clapboard displaying the show’s title, he wrote, “Day one! Grateful,” adding a prayer hands emoji for good measure.

Smith Metzler has consistently been sharing updates about the production process and casting decisions with her audience. In May, she posted a picture from the writers’ room, followed by a photo with director Nicole Kassell, who is directing the first two episodes in July. As of now, there are no photos of the cast at work, but we’ll be on the lookout for any updates.

Netflix has not yet announced the exact number of episodes for “Sirens,” but it’s expected to be somewhere between six and eight, or even up to ten. Filming started in July and is likely to carry on through August and potentially September. Smith Metzler will undoubtedly share when production comes to an end. Post-production work will then keep us occupied for the remainder of this year and into early 2025, leading to a presumed release date around the second half of 2025.
