Avengers 5: Doomsday: Is Robert Downey Jr. Playing Tony Stark or Victor Von Doom?

As a long-time MCU fan with years of experience following the intricacies of Marvel’s cinematic universe, I am thrilled but also puzzled by Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Studios’ surprising reveal at San Diego Comic-Con has caused a stir in the MCU fan community. The news of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, along with the title change of “Avengers 5” to “Avengers: Doomsday,” has ignited passionate discussions among fans. Initially, Marvel Studios had titled “Avengers 5” as “The Kang Dynasty,” but later dropped it after Jonathan Majors’ departure as Kang the Conqueror. This sudden change in direction for the narrative has left fans pondering about Downey Jr.’s character. Will he be playing an evil version of Tony Stark or embracing the intricacies of Victor Von Doom?

Here’s everything you need to know about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to MCU.

Is Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom an evil variant of Tony Stark in Avengers: Doomsday?

Marvel Studios has made it clear that Robert Downey Jr. will not be portraying Doctor Doom in an upcoming project, and there’s no indication of him depicting a wicked Tony Stark alter ego instead.

At Comic-Con, the Russo brothers revealed that they will introduce the intricate character of Victor Von Doom to the screen. According to News 18, before Downey Jr. made his entrance wearing a mask, the brothers stated, “To demonstrate the boundless potential of the Marvel Universe, we present the individual who can embody Victor von Doom.” This implies that Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Dr. Doom will be in a different universe with no ties to Tony Stark’s Iron Man persona.

Chris Evans once held two significant roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He portrayed Johnny Storm in “Fantastic Four” (2005), and Steve Rogers in the initial MCU storyline. In a similar vein, this alternative version could bear Tony Stark’s visage but hide the true nature of Dr. Doom in his timeline. However, due to the extensive scarring on Dr. Doom’s face from a machine explosion in comic books, it is unlikely that he would be recognized as a Tony Stark variant based on his appearance alone.

In the Marvel Comic Universe (Earth 616), Downey Jr. took on the role of Iron Man. He made the ultimate sacrifice towards the end of the Infinity Saga and managed to save the universe. Subsequently, Downey Jr. announced his departure from the MCU following Endgame. However, at Comic-Con (SDCC), there was an unexpected announcement – Downey’s return as a villain left many talking.

Some fans found it hard to accept this news. They had hoped that studios might unveil Downey’s supervillain character as a wicked version of Tony Stark at the last moment. This was a possibility given the vast possibilities of the multiverse. Moreover, Marvel and Disney could draw inspiration from Tony Stark’s evil persona in comics. However, there have been no reports of Marvel altering Downey’s role, and he is set to portray Dr. Doom instead.
