As a dedicated gamer and avid movie fan, I can’t help but feel amused by the playful banter between Josh Hartnett and Matt Damon during the filming of Oppenheimer. Hartnett’s transformation into Ernest Lawrence for the role was nothing short of impressive, gaining over 30 pounds to accurately portray the physicist.
While working on the set of “Oppenheimer,” Josh Hartnett was given some less-than-useful suggestions from his fellow actor, Matt Damon.
What was the Advice Matt Damon Gave to Josh Hartnett While Filming Oppenheimer?
In an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Hartnett discussed his role as nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Oppenheimer. To accurately portray the character, Hartnett added over twenty-five pounds to his frame. If Hartnett had spoken with Damon beforehand, he may not have undergone this significant weight gain for the part.
As a seasoned interviewer, I’ve had my fair share of valuable advice from colleagues and industry veterans. However, there was once an encounter that left me perplexed and somewhat dismayed. This was with Damon, a renowned actor whom I greatly admired.
Hartnett broke Damon’s rule of thumb for acting: don’t gain weight over 40.
“Matt kept insisting that I’d be stuck in a cycle of losing and gaining weight for the rest of my life, as my body would constantly try to regain the lost pounds. He shared this perspective repeatedly during production, leaving me feeling disheartened as I had already put back on the weight he was warning me about.”
Damon, Hartnett, and the entire Oppenheimer cast received numerous recognitions for their work in the film, with a notable win being the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards. Following this success, Oppenheimer continued to shine during awards season, ultimately securing seven Oscars, one of which was granted to it as the Best Picture.
Hartnett and Damon will appear in films released in August. Hartnett takes the lead role in M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Trap,” hitting theaters on August 2, 2024. Damon joins Casey Affleck in Doug Liman’s “The Instigators,” which becomes available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting August 9, 2024.
