Unsung Hero Blu-ray Review: True Story Gets Lovingly Crated Home Release

As a gamer and movie enthusiast with a soft spot for heartwarming stories, I was pleasantly surprised by the faith-based music drama “Unsung Hero.” I don’t identify as a country music fan or particularly religious, but this film touched me in ways that went beyond its genre or spiritual underpinnings.

I make it a point to watch and encourage nearly every movie premiered at my local cinema. Though this means enduring several disappointing films, it’s worth it for the unexpected gems I discover. One such find was “Unsung Hero,” directed by Richard Ramsey and Joel Smallbone. Despite not being their typical viewer, as I’m not particularly fond of country music or deeply religious, I was still deeply touched by this film. It beautifully portrays the power of human nature and the impact a united community can have instead of one that’s divided.

Inspired by a real-life marvel, the film “Unsung Hero” focuses on Helen, portrayed by Daisy Betts, and her husband David Smallbone, played by Joel Smallbone from For King & Country. Together with their seven children and a few suitcases, they emigrate from Australia to America in pursuit of a new beginning and their shared passion for music. As they work to establish a fresh life, they come to recognize the exceptional musical talents within their offspring. Consequently, these children grew up to become two highly accomplished artists in inspirational music, earning a total of five Grammy Awards: For King & Country and Rebecca St. James.

Instead of “While the allure of the film for many is likely to be seeing the childhoods of Rebecca St. James and the two For King & Country members, Unsung Hero primarily highlights their mother, Helen Smallbone. portrayed brilliantly by Daisy Betts. This remarkable woman, who raised seven children, plays a pivotal role in holding the family together as her husband, David, chases his dreams of establishing a music company in America. The film offers an insightful look into the life of a devoted mother who put her children’s needs above her own and displays her patience and kindness throughout.”

In this heartfelt movie, Joel Smallbone, who also co-directed, portrays the role of his character’s father. He depicts a loving man whose professional aspirations unfortunately lead to hardships for his family. Smallbone skillfully balances the virtues and flaws of his on-screen father, revealing how his pride could make him apprehensive towards the assistance provided by their local church. The film predominantly explores the challenges faced by the Smallbone clan, with the final act highlighting the budding music career of their daughter. The movie concludes beautifully with a captivating musical performance, leaving the audience with a sense of warmth and charm.

The home edition is equally rich in emotion, I’m glad to report, and boasts an array of intriguing bonus materials. Two standout offerings are an audio commentary led by producers Joshua Walsh and Luke Smallbone, alongside directors Joel Smallbone and Richard Ramsey, and a comprehensive 54-minute documentary titled “Miracles Are Everywhere,” hosted by Luke. The commentary track adds depth as the Smallbone brothers share their feelings about seeing their past brought to life on screen, while the documentary provides an in-depth exploration of the film’s production.

Three more videos are part of the package: Compassion, a 3-minute video where Luke Smallbone and Rebecca St. James discuss Compassion International, an organization that aims to eradicate child poverty; Faith in the Journey, a 6-minute clip featuring the family sharing their faith experiences related to the film; and The Bridge Is Out by Greg Laurie, an animated religious short for which I’m unsure of its connection to the other content but may appeal to children.

Unsung Hero Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

Regardless of your faith, Unsung Hero delivers a powerful message and captivating tale. This heartwarming story highlights the importance of kindness and compassion, making it relatable and inspiring for everyone. The Unsung Hero Blu-ray includes various compelling bonus materials, such as an insightful commentary track and an enlightening behind-the-scenes documentary, making it a must-have for fans of the artists or anyone seeking an uplifting real-life experience.
