The Blair Witch Project Producer Announces a Blu-ray Release of the ‘Complete’ Movie

As a dedicated gamer and huge fan of The Blair Witch Project, I can’t help but feel frustrated and disappointed by the ongoing saga surrounding the release of a true-to-vision Blu-ray edition of this classic horror film. For over two decades, I have watched in disbelief as various versions of the film have been released with subpar transfers that failed to do justice to the original vision of its creators.

Michael Monello, producer of “The Blair Witch Project,” has announced that a new Blu-ray version of the film, which will fully realize the directors’ original vision, is being released by Second Sight.

The double pack of The Blair Witch Project and its sequel, to be released by Imprint this year, is believed to be using the same old footage. This is a topic that Monello expresses strong feelings about.

The Blair Witch Project to be complete once more

“Artisan/Lions Gate have been distributing an unintended version of this film for the past 25 years, complete with faulty motion and grainy video instead of the original film,” Monello stated. “Now that we have a true-to-the-original release on the horizon, I believe I’ve earned the privilege to criticize their earlier transfer. If they choose to sell it without our input, I can’t prevent them, but I won’t be silent about my project being released with subpar quality and repetitive bonus features.”

Monello continued by laying out what would be featured in the Second Sight version of the film.

As a longtime fan of the original film, I can’t help but feel disappointed with the way it has been presented to audiences over the years. Back in 1999, I eagerly awaited the release of this masterpiece on home video, only to be left feeling cheated. The transfer that Artisan provided lacked the depth and clarity that I knew the film was capable of. It was a disappointment not just for me, but for countless other fans who craved the authentic cinematic experience.

Later on Reddit, Monello provided more information and disclosed that he wouldn’t gain any financial benefit from his involvement in the recent transfer. His detailed post sheds light on the issues with the initial home video transfer. Feel free to check it out here.

25th anniversary soured by animosity

To mark The Blair Witch Project’s 25-year milestone, tensions have resurfaced regarding how those involved in the production were treated. The cast members expressed feelings of disrespect from Lionsgate and claimed they had been denied rightful residuals and fair compensation. More recently, they took action by proposing a filmmaking grant, with original stars Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams actively participating.

Leonard found it surprising and intriguing that Lionsgate and Blumhouse utilized his likeness for the promotion of The Blair Witch Project’s comeback, without informing any of the cast members about it prior.

As a gamer, I’ve put in 25 long years pouring my heart and soul into creating amazing gaming experiences for fans. But here’s the kicker – those who reaped most of the rewards from our collective efforts have shown little respect towards us creators. It feels unfair, unpleasant, and downright disrespectful.

It’s anticipated that the Second Sight edition of The Blair Witch Project will be formally unveiled shortly. I can’t wait to experience the movie as originally intended again, and I’m curious to discover what unique bonus content is included.
