Kevin Durant Injury Update: Will He Miss the Olympics?

As a long-time basketball fan and follower of Kevin Durant‘s career, I’m keeping a close eye on the latest developments regarding his injury and participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Durant’s history of lower body injuries is a cause for concern, and it’s disheartening to see him go through this yet again.

Interested basketball spectators are eager to learn the most recent news regarding Kevin Durant’s injury status and his potential participation in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The incident occurred just before Team USA’s scheduled July 6 practice in Las Vegas. At 35 years old, the Phoenix Suns forward, Durant, missed all five exhibition games for Team USA to ensure a swift recovery. Let’s explore the details behind Kevin Durant’s injury and his prospects of joining the Olympic team.

How did Kevin Durant get injured and hurt?

In the beginning of July, Durant injured his calf. He’s being cautious about the healing process as Team USA prepares for its initial Olympic contest.

On July 19th, I received some great news about my recovery progress, as reported by the Associated Press. I shared that I’ve been making strides and will continue testing myself with specific workouts. My goal is to keep pushing forward and see how my body responds while I run and explore what lies ahead.

Steve Kerr, coach of Team USA, expressed at a July 22 press conference that he hasn’t considered not bringing Durant to Paris for the Olympics. Nevertheless, as reported by journalist Grant Afseth, the team intends to have Durant participate in several practices before making a decision about his participation. Currently, there are no plans to substitute him with another player.

Durant has experienced his fair share of lower body injuries. In the 2019 NBA Finals, he sustained a torn right Achilles, causing him to miss the entire 2019-20 season. During the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, he suffered left and right MCL sprains, respectively.

Will Kevin Durant miss the Olympics?

According to recent updates, Durant is expected to attend the Olympics without issue. However, there’s still doubt about his ability to participate in competitive play.

In a video uploaded by FIBA on July 24th, Durant can be observed with Team USA. Therefore, he remains on the team’s roster at this point in time.

Despite ESPN’s Brian Windhorst expressing doubt on July 22 that Durant’s injury would be sufficiently healed for him to participate in Team USA’s first Olympic game against Serbia on July 28, the team still has upcoming matches. Grouped in C, they are scheduled to face South Sudan on July 31 and Puerto Rico on August 3.

Luckily for the team, they managed to secure five wins in a row during their exhibition matches, with Durant sitting out. As they prepare for the Olympics, they boast an unbeaten record of 5-0. Notably, some of these wins were narrowly decided, such as their 92-88 victory over Germany and their 101-100 triumph against South Sudan.

At present, Durant holds the title for the greatest number of points scored for Team USA during Olympics, amounting to 435 points in total.
