Lisa Kudrow recalls her first impression of Matthew Perry at the Friends table read

As a huge fan of “Friends” and someone who grew up watching the show multiple times, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by the loss of Matthew Perry, who brought the iconic character Chandler Bing to life. The recent tributes from his former co-stars, particularly Lisa Kudrow’s heartfelt stories on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, have brought back a flood of memories and emotions.

After Matthew Perry’s sad demise, his “Friends” co-stars have expressed their tributes in heartfelt messages, recalling the wonderful moments they shared together. Lisa Kudrow, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay throughout the show’s ten-season run on NBC, has found herself revisiting “Friends” due to Perry’s impact. Losing someone so full of life and having such a significant influence on your past can be a challenging process. However, the Friends cast has found solace in their shared memories and the support they provide for one another during this difficult time.

Recently on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend,” Jennifer Aniston’s former co-star Lisa Kudrow visited to discuss her new Apple TV+ series called “Time Bandits.” During their chat, they reminisced about when Kudrow joined the cast of “Friends.” In an amusing exchange, O’Brien confessed that he was envious of Kudrow’s humor which she had praised extensively. After watching the show, O’Brien came to appreciate just how funny Kudrow truly was.

In the podcast episode, available for viewing in the clip below, Kudrow and O’Brien shared a lighthearted moment over his past jealousy. They also reminisced about other memories they have of the late actor, such as when Kudrow first assumed Chandler, Perry’s character on “Friends,” was meant to be gay.

I thought that Chandler character, when I read [the script], I went, ‘Oh, they have a gay character, that’s good.’ I thought — that’s all I heard. At the table read, I just did a double take at him, ‘Oh, my god,” I never even in a million years could’ve envisioned anyone playing the character like that with his own rhythm and everything.

Kudrow has previously mentioned in a 2014 interview that she had once thought Chandler might be gay based on their shared experiences. Perry apparently left a deep impression during their first meeting for the table read, making it an unforgettable moment for Kudrow. It’s no surprise then, that after so many years, she is now eager to binge-watch “Friends” just like its dedicated fans.

After Matthew died, I could start watching the show again because it wasn’t about me. It had to do with him for some reason.

As a dedicated gamer, I can totally connect with Kudrow sharing in the podcast that she binge-watched Friends whenever it was on TV. And let me tell you, there have been times when I’ve found myself doing the same thing with my favorite games! But remember her story about filming the fountain scene? Man, that must have been a chilly and uncomfortable experience for her, getting soaked, freezing, and having to dance over and over again. Yet, even in those frustrating moments, Perry managed to make her laugh with his side-splitting jokes. His humor not only brightened up the set but also shaped Chandler’s sarcastic personality we all adore.

On October 28, 2023, Perry mournfully passed away at his residence in Los Angeles, California. His absence has left a significant void among “Friends” enthusiasts and the entire entertainment industry.
