As a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and its subsequent adaptations, I have eagerly anticipated the release of House of the Dragon, the newest addition to the franchise. The latest season has not disappointed, as it delves deeper into the Targaryen dynasty and introduces new characters that add complexity to the already rich tapestry of Westeros’ history.
In “House of the Dragon” Season 2, I’m thrilled to discover that Seasmoke has a new rider. Simultaneously, Corlys appears to have found a probable heir for Driftmark. The focus is on Addam and Alyn of Hull.
The two on-screen figures share the same biological father; this detail has been clearly established in the series, contrasting the ambiguity of their paternal lineage in the original text.
In the book, there are suggestions that Addam and Alyn are sons of Ser Laenor Velaryon, the son of Corlys and the husband of Rhaenyra. That is unlikely as even in the book, Laenor prefers men. Instead, it’s possible that the two are sons of Corlys, and that’s why they have to remain far away from Dragonstone and Corlys. Corlys doesn’t want them to anger his wife, Rhaenys.
House of the Dragon confirms the paternity of Addam and Alyn
It didn’t take much time for the “House of the Dragon” to reveal that Corlys is the father of the brothers, a fact known by Rhaenys. When Rhaenys encounters Alyn and expresses gratitude for his role in saving Corlys’s life, she admires his appearance and comments on his mother’s beauty. She then declares her intention to spare a child from being punished for their father’s infidelity.
In simple terms, it’s evident that she is aware that Alyn is her husband’s son. Yet, it’s unclear if she knew about Addam being his son as well. However, during House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 6, Addam and Alyn’s conversation reveals that they share the same father.
Addam yearns for recognition, whereas Alyn strives to keep a low profile. However, it’s more challenging for Alyn, as he has white hair which he meticulously shaves. In contrast, Addam wishes he had that distinctive feature to showcase his Velaryon lineage. Unfortunately, he possesses dark hair instead.
Seasmoke knows who Addam of Hull is
As a gamer, I’ve come to realize that Velaryon blood holds great significance. After being ridden roughly by Ser Steffon, my horse, Seasmoke, had other plans. He refused to be mounted and instead made his own choice. Wandering the shores of Driftmark, Seasmoke discovered Addam of Hull, and graciously bestowed his allegiance upon him.
Seasmoke understands that this man is Corlys’s son. It’s appropriate that Seasmoke selects Addam as his new rider, granting him the longed-for validation: acknowledgment.
