Who is Khatija Rahman? All you need to know about AR Rahman's daughter who is going to make her debut as a composer in Tamil cinema

I have always admired Khatija Rahman for her resilience and dedication to her craft. Her musical journey began in 2010 when she made her playback singing debut in the sci-fi action film Robot, collaborating with music legends like her father A. R. Rahman and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. Since then, she has worked with renowned artists such as U2 on their single “Ahimsa” during their Joshua Tree Tour in Mumbai.

Khatija Rahman, the elder daughter of the famed Indian composer A. R. Rahman, began her playback singing career in the 2010 science fiction action film Robot. She sang the title track in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi versions, teaming up with music greats including her father and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam. In 2019, she joined forces with Irish band U2 on their single Ahimsa and showcased it during their Joshua Tree Tour in Mumbai.

Khatija’s first album, titled Kuhu Kuhu, pays homage to the iconic Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar. The record includes collaborations with the renowned Firdaus Orchestra based in the U.A.E. In addition to singing, Khatija made her mark as a composer in the film Minmini. Her 2020 single Farishton gained attention at international film festivals. Beyond her music endeavors, Khatija plays an essential role as Trustee and Director of Outreach Programmes & Global Initiatives at the A. R. Rahman Foundation, where she engages in social impact projects.

When did Khatija Rahman rise to fame?

Khatija Rahman has left a significant mark in the music world. Her fame goes beyond her projects with Coke Studio, but her partnership with rapper Arivu on the song “Sagavaasi” drew particular attention. This was the inaugural track for Coke Studio Tamil, and it beautifully expresses the deep connection between people and nature.

The distinctive tone of Khatija’s voice and the song’s profound emotion resonated with audiences. Furthermore, Khatija has contributed her vocals to AR Rahman’s impactful 2022 Tamil anthems, Moopilla Thamizhe Thaaye and Chinnanjiru, in his films “Mooppala Adhithar” and “Ponniyin Selvan: II,” respectively.

Khatija on her burqa controversy

Khatija often gets criticized for always wearing a burqa. Despite dealing with persistent online harassment, she spoke up about her decision in a lengthy social media post, clearly stating her views on the matter.

“It’s been just a year since we last discussed this issue, yet here we are again. With so many important matters unfolding in the country, it’s disconcerting that some focus solely on what women choose to wear. I find myself once more deeply moved and compelled to speak out.”

For the past year, I’ve discovered a new side of myself that I haven’t recognized in a long time. I won’t be feeble or regret my life choices. I’m content and proud of who I am, and I appreciate those who have accepted me as I am. My actions will demonstrate this, with hope. I don’t intend to elaborate any more. To those questioning why I’m sharing this and explaining myself, unfortunately it is necessary for me to do so.
