Deadpool & Wolverine Review: Bloody Fun MCU Fan Service

As a lifelong gamer and Marvel fanboy, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Deadpool and Wolverine were teaming up for a new MCU adventure. The prospect of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman sharing the screen once again was enough to get me hyped, but throw in some time travel shenanigans and the addition of the Time Variance Authority, and I was ready to embark on an epic journey.

The Merc with a Mouth is finally entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In simpler terms, Deadpool and Wolverine blend the X-Men films from 20th Century Fox with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Serving as both a new Phase Five project and the third Deadpool movie, this film brings back Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, the smart-mouthed hero who encounters the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization that manages the different timelines in the series. (For those unfamiliar with Disney+’s Loki TV show, the TVA is responsible for maintaining the order of these timelines.) In this adventure, Wade joins forces with a variant of Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, to prevent Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) from disrupting the timeline.

The team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen is a delightful cinematic experience. This heartfelt tribute honors decades of Marvel media projects while maintaining the signature loud, brash, and bloody elements that made the first two Deadpool films a hit. Prepare for an unforgettable, thrilling adventure that’s best enjoyed with a crowd. When Jackman retired as Wolverine in Logan (2017), many thought that was the end of this iconic portrayal. But if there was anyone who could lure Jackman back into the role, it would be his real-life friend and Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. And who better to helm this project than Shawn Levy, who has previously directed both Jackman (in Real Steel) and Reynolds (in Free Guy and The Adam Project)?

Deadpool and Wolverine make an ideal pair on-screen. The chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman is remarkable. They bring to mind classic comedy duos, where one plays the jester (Deadpool) and the other the straight man (Wolverine). Deadpool shines brightest when he clashes with more serious figures, as demonstrated by his interactions with Josh Brolin’s Cable in 2018.

In this film, two opposing characters are passed the baton of the buddy cop dynamic from its sequel, constantly on the brink of violence against each other. The humor lies in the fact that since these characters cannot be killed, they can inflict harm that would be fatal to others. They resemble Tom and Jerry, an unlikely duo of friends-turned-enemies who take turns injuring each other, only to lend a hand in the next moment. Their violent interactions possess an exaggerated cartoonish quality reminiscent of ’90s comic books, making it an entertaining spectacle akin to heating up a microwave burrito.

In this film, the formidable pairing of Wade and their extraordinary abilities transcends beyond simple bloodlines and crude humor. The character of Wade faces a significant challenge as he finds himself estranged from his former relationships, namely Vanessa (portrayed by Morena Baccarin), and struggling to find a sense of belonging amidst the X-Men and Avengers. This portrayal of Wolverine carries a heavy emotional load, with Jackman delivering a profoundly moving and multifaceted performance. Wade is haunted by the guilt of his past actions, seeking solace in alcohol. Jackman’s commitment to the role results in an intensely emotional experience for viewers.

Perhaps only true comic fans are eagerly anticipating if the character from Faraway Downs will put on the famous black cape (without revealing it here).

As a gamer and film enthusiast, I can’t help but admire how skillfully Levy manages the action scenes in this movie. He infuses them with an infectious energy through his clever camera work and music selection. The opening credits of Deadpool and Wolverine are simply brilliant and remain one of my favorite parts of the film. What I love about Deadpool’s character is that he doesn’t hold back from poking fun at the MCU, Fox, or any creative choices that might be questionable. Some jokes really hit the mark for me, particularly those that involve breaking the fourth wall. However, some jokes feel a bit too trendy and may lose their impact in just a few years.

In an impressive display of cinematography, Levy skillfully employs tight and panoramic shots in Deadpool & Wolverine to enhance the humor. Amidst the abundance of witty quips in this exhilarating superhero tale, the heart lies in two flawed protagonists seeking redemption. This film underscores that setbacks can take various shapes – even those as appealing as Hugh Jackman donning the iconic yellow-and-blue Wolverine costume.

Reynolds continues to bring the laughs as Deadpool, while Jackman impresses with his acting skills. Corrin shines as the complex villain Cassandra Nova. The plot may seem thin and serves mostly as a connector for amusing scenes and guest appearances. However, the joy of watching this film makes up for it. It’s an entertaining homage to Marvel, appealing to both comic enthusiasts and moviegoers.

A new chapter begins in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool and Wolverine. For the first time, Disney-owned Marvel Studios is diving into an “R” rated film, and based on this installation, the possibilities are endless. Trust us, your go-to source for all things amusing (even Deadpool himself would chuckle in approval).
