As a longtime fan of Steven Soderbergh’s innovative and eclectic filmography, I’m beyond excited to hear that Focus Features has set a release date for his latest project, “Black Bag.” Soderbergh’s impressive body of work spans over three decades, showcasing his versatility as a director, from thought-provoking dramas like “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and “Erin Brockovich,” to thrilling heist films such as the Ocean’s series.
Focus Features has set a release date for Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag.
“The movie ‘Black Bag,’ a fresh spy thriller, is helmed by Soderbergh and boasts Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in its star-studded cast. David Koepp penned the screenplay, known for his collaborative work on the 1993 blockbuster ‘Jurassic Park’ with Michael Crichton.”
When is Black Bag’s release date?
On March 14, 2025, in the US, Focus Features will introduce the film “Black Bag” to theaters. Responsible for its release in foreign markets is Universal Pictures International.
Together with Blanchett in “Tár” and “Borderlands,” Fassbender in “The Killer” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” the cast of Black Bag includes Regé-Jean Page from “Bridgerton” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” Marisa Abela known for “Back to Black,” Naomie Harris in “Skyfall” and “Rampage,” Pierce Brosnan famous for “GoldenEye” and “Mamma Mia!,” and Tom Burke, recognized for his roles in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
The film is produced by Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs.
Plot details for Black Bag remain under wraps at this time. Filming began in London in May 2024.
Soderbergh is recognized for directing films such as “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” (1989), “Kafka” (1991), “Out of Sight” (1998), “Erin Brockovich” and “Traffic” (both in 2000), “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “Solaris” (2002), “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen” (both in 2004 and 2007 respectively), “The Informant!” (2009), “Contagion” (2011), “Magic Mike” (2012), “Side Effects” (2013), “Logan Lucky” (2017), “Unsane” (2018), “High Flying Bird” (2019), “Let Them All Talk” (2020), “No Sudden Move” (2021), and most recently, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023).
Another film by Soderbergh, titled “Presence,” is set to be released soon besides “Black Bag.” This movie, which had its premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was later acquired by Neon, features an ensemble cast including Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, and Chris Sullivan. The plot revolves around a family that unwittingly discovers they’re not the only inhabitants of their new house. Soderbergh collaborated with Koepp on writing the script for “Presence.”
