Detective Conan Now Has Over 1000 Chapters, But The Creator Almost Canceled The Series In Anger

As a devoted fan of Detective Conan, I can only imagine how different our world would be if manga artist Gosho Aoyama had decided to end the series 30 years ago. It’s hard to fathom that we might not have been able to enjoy the intricate mysteries and captivating storyline of this beloved franchise.

Detective Conan is a highly cherished and recognized series of anime and manga globally, with a significant following and longevity that ranks among the longest-running shows and comics, such as One Piece.

In an alternate reality, the events of the manga may have played out much differently. Gosho Aoyama, the acclaimed manga artist, shares that the series could have concluded around 30 years ago. This was before it gained the widespread recognition and success it currently enjoys. Pondering over the possible explanations for such an early termination, we can only speculate on potential factors.

Detective Conan Artist Almost Ended Manga Early

In Gosho Aoyama’s 30-year anniversary publication, the artist disclosed that there were two explanations why his work came close to being terminated prematurely, prior to achieving great acclaim.

One explanation he gave was that creating fresh mysteries for his weekly detective series proved to be quite challenging and extremely taxing. It’s not surprising, after all, to concoct compelling new cases for your main character to unravel each week.

An alternate expression could be: Aoyama grew annoyed when his editors and managers intrusively interfered with his creative process by constantly giving him instructions.

One instance of this occurred with manga artist Kazuhiko Shimamoto, who shared that during the creation of “Aoyama,” a manga published prior to “Detective Conan,” an editor disapproved of the main character’s facial expression in a particular panel. When Aoyamasked for clarification on how the character should be depicted instead, the editor responded by taking the paper and setting it ablaze, even hurling it at the artist – making me think my supervisor was tough, wow.

The artist was pushed to conclude “Conan” prematurely due to this kind of conduct, and it’s unfortunate that the manga could have been completed 27 years ago. Fortunately, Aoyama chose to take an extended hiatus in 1997 – a break he hadn’t taken extensively before.

During his time off, Aoyama contemplated wrapping up Detective Conan. However, right as he made up his mind, his editor phoned with a proposal: “Would you consider working on a new anime project instead?” Being an avid anime enthusiast himself, Aoyama opted to continue and generate fresh cases for Conan to tackle.
