Is Bernie Sanders Running for President or Kamala Harris’s Vice President?

As a dedicated gamer and politics enthusiast who has closely followed the twists and turns of American presidential campaigns for years, I have developed a deep appreciation for the intricacies of the political landscape. The ongoing speculation surrounding Bernie Sanders‘ intentions for the 2024 presidential race or his potential role as Vice President on Kamala Harris’ ticket is a topic that has piqued my interest once again.

Several people are wondering if Bernie Sanders will make a third bid for the presidency or accept the vice presidential nomination from Kamala Harris, should Joe Biden decide to step down in 2024. Sanders, the 82-year-old senator from Vermont (who turns 83 on September 8, 2024), previously ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in both 2016 and 2020, with Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden winning those races respectively. Could Sanders’ third attempt bring him success? Here’s what we currently know about his potential involvement in the 2024 presidential race as the Democratic nominee or as Harris’ running mate against Donald Trump.

Why could Bernie Sanders be running for president or be chosen for vice president?

At present, Bernie Sanders hasn’t made a decision about running for president again, as of July 23rd. He hasn’t endorsed Kamala Harris, and there’s been no news regarding him being considered for her vice presidential pick.

In April 2022, Faiz Shakir, a senior advisor to Senator Sanders, announced that Sanders hadn’t definitively ruled out running for president again, potentially in a 2024 Democratic primary if it remained open. However, the Democratic National Convention could be considered “open” only if other candidates contested against Vice President Harris. Yet, given her current endorsement from President Biden and the lack of a clear frontrunner amassing a majority of delegates, it seems unlikely that an open primary would materialize.

After Biden’s withdrawal, Sanders expressed appreciation for his service and titled him “the most worker-friendly president in recent American history” in a July 21 X post. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on July 19, Sanders voiced criticisms against Trump’s climate change policies and playfully accepted the audience’s chants of his name as if he had already been nominated.

Sanders has consistently backed Biden and urged him to continue his campaign. As per Slate’s article, the reason behind Sanders’ commitment stems from securing significant policy agreements in Biden’s initial 100-day plan, including Social Security expansion and eliminating medical debt. By doing so, Sanders strengthens his role as a dedicated team player within the Democratic Party. Should he consider a future presidential or vice presidential bid, this loyalty could prove beneficial, mitigating any potential accusations that might derail Biden’s campaign.

I strongly believe that Senator Bernie Sanders would make an excellent vice presidential pick for Kamala Harris. With his extensive experience in Congress, numerous presidential campaigns, and engaging debates, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table.
