House of the Dragon Season 2: Why Did Alicent Send Daeron to Oldtown?

As a devoted fan of House of the Dragon, I have been eagerly following the intricate narrative of this captivating series, and Daeron Targaryen’s enigmatic character has always piqued my interest. Though he was conspicuously absent in season one, his presence has been subtly woven into the fabric of season two.

Daeron Targaryen, a long-awaited yet enigmatic figure in House of the Dragon, was rumored to have been excluded from the series after his absence in season 1. Fans debated if he had been scrapped from the production. However, Ryan Condal, the show’s co-creator, confirmed before the premiere of season 2 that Daeron was an integral part of the storyline. Surprisingly, his name has come up frequently in the second season. Unlike his siblings, Daeron has spent a significant chunk of his life in Oldtown, the city governed by House Hightower in their region of the Reach.

Here’s everything we have learned about Alicent’s reasons for sending Daemon to Oldtown.

Why did Alicent send Daeron away to Oldtown in House of the Dragon?

In simpler terms, the House of the Dragon series hasn’t explicitly explained why Alicent permitted Daeron to be taken to Oldtown and raised by Lord Hobert Hightower and his son, Ormund. During their conversation, Gwayne Hightower mentioned that Daeron is now 16 years old and described him as strong, intelligent, and skilled with both music and weapons. Realizing Alicent’s intent, Gwayne added that Daeron is kind-hearted, which caught Alicent’s attention as a trait not commonly seen in Aegon II and Aemond.

The show hasn’t explicitly mentioned when Daeron was sent to Oldtown, but it can be assumed that he left the Red Keep prior to Joffrey Velaryon’s birth. After a decade-long time jump, the series reveals that only Aegon and Aemond remain in King’s Landing following Rhaenyra and Laenor’s wedding.

In the realm of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, it’s common for children from noble families to be raised in other noble households as wards. For example, Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon grew up under the care of Jon Arryn. Consequently, Daeron’s upbringing at Oldtown makes perfect sense since he wasn’t Viserys’ eldest son or firstborn child.

Another possibility: Otto could have intended to hold Daeron in Oldtown as a bargaining chip against the monarchy following his dismissal as the Hand. Moreover, hosting Daeron brought with it the advantage of having Tessarion, his dragon, residing there. Although Tessarion was still a juvenile when Daeron arrived, the dragon’s presence would have been a source of pride for House Housetower.

Will Daeron Targaryen become king if Aemond dies?

As a gamer, I can confirm that if Aemond meets his end, Daeron stands next in line to claim the Iron Throne among the Greens.

Despite the possibility in “House of the Dragon,” it seems unlikely that Daeron will ascend to the throne as depicted in the books. Instead, Aegon II survives his brothers and later commissions statues in their honor. However, following Aegon’s demise, Tyland Lannister halts the construction process.
