As a dedicated fan of Chinese dramas, I absolutely adore the genre of costume dramas or period pieces. There is something truly captivating about being transported back in time and immersing myself in the intricate stories and stunning visuals these dramas offer. The meticulous attention to detail when it comes to the costumes and make-up is simply breathtaking.
Chinese audiences greatly enjoy costume or period dramas. These types of shows are set in specific historical eras and feature authentic costumes and makeup for the characters. Costume dramas encompass various themes such as thrillers, romances, and more.
As someone who has spent years delving into the rich and captivating world of Chinese costume dramas, I’m thrilled to share my top picks from Netflix’s extensive collection. From the mesmerizing “The Double” on Youku, to the regal charm of “The Princess Royal,” these series transport us to another time and place.
The Double (2024)
In 2024, “The Double” emerged as a highly successful Chinese drama, with Wu Jinyan and Wang Xingyue starring in the leading roles. This gripping thriller has shattered various records and has been acclaimed as one of the top suspense dramas of the year.
Xue Fang Fei, played by Wu Jinyan, is a well-educated woman from a scholarly household who defies family tradition by marrying the man she chooses. However, her decision leads to dangerous consequences as she becomes entangled in deceitful plots. Her power-hungry spouse then fabricates evidence and accuses her of infidelity.
When the minister’s daughter is left for dead in a ditch after being attempted murdered, she miraculously survives. Following the demise of her savior, she assumes her benefactress’ name and persona, and heads back to the capital city to seek retribution against those who had wronged them both.
Fang Fei is now with her new partner, Duke Su (Wang Xingyue), as well as her saviors’ family. As a team, they assist the young emperor in exposing traitors and unraveling the intricate mysteries that jeopardize the kingdom’s tranquility.
The Princess Royal (2024)
In this Chinese period romance drama, the main characters are portrayed by Zhao Jinmai as Li Rong and Zhang Linghe as Pei Wen Xuan. The storyline, revealed in the trailer, follows the couple’s journey of getting married at a young age. Initially smitten with each other, their love eventually waned as the passage of time took its toll.
In this desperate predicament, Li Rong finds himself drawn to another person. On the other hand, Wen Xuan remains fully committed to his country’s service. Unbeknownst to them, conspirators exploit their situation, driving a wedge between them and ultimately resulting in their tragic demise.
An unexplained event with supernatural overtones transports them back to the year of their wedding. Despite their intentions to prevent their past marriage from repeating itself, they find themselves drawn to one another once more.
Who Rules the World (2022)
I’m a huge fan of this Wuxia C-drama! In it, you’ll find me cheering for the captivating performances of Yang Yang and Zhao Lusi in the leading roles. This production is based on Qing Ling Yue’s beloved novel “Qie Shi Tian Xia.” The romantic tale unfolds as two individuals with contrasting beliefs discover a deep connection. They prove their mettle in their respective domains, eventually teaming up to challenge political corruption and deceit. As the story progresses, the seeds of love start to take root between them.
The Princess Weiyoung (2016)
During this turbulent time, the unexpected disappearance of the Northern Wei Dynasty results in Princess Feng Xin Er being left bereft of family and companionship. Miraculously escaping death herself, she inadvertently finds herself in enemy territory. Desperate for refuge, she assumes the guise of Li Wei Young, the prime minister’s daughter. Despite encountering numerous challenges, her intelligence and strong sense of justice enable her to rise to become one of the most influential women in the land.
Goodbye My Princess (2019)
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: I once played a game where I was Xiao Feng, the ninth princess of Western Liang, harboring my own secrets. The crown prince and I found ourselves drawn to each other in a love story that unfolded. Yet, I had to abandon my old life and take on the role of Crown Princess. On the other hand, the prince was compelled by politics to marry a princess from a distant land – me. Our hidden agendas added an intriguing layer to our budding romance.
The newlyweds and I disagree. He clings to his preferred concubine, while she focuses on her own life. In the treacherous Eastern Palace, old memories lurk beneath the surface, threatening to ignite lethal power struggles.
Besides The Legend of Anle (2023) and Judge Dee’s Mystery (2024), there are other noteworthy productions. Enjoy your stream!
