As a dedicated follower of Hinduism and someone deeply connected to my faith, I find the recent developments surrounding the film “Kalki 2898 AD” deeply troubling. With a heavy heart, I have witnessed yet another instance of what seems like blatant disrespect towards our sacred texts and the beliefs they uphold.
Acharya Pramod Krishnam, a former Congress leader and head of Sri Kalki Foundation in Sambhal, served a legal notice last Saturday to the makers of Kalki 2898 AD. Notable figures named in this notice include Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan and South Indian actor Prabhas. This unexpected move against the film team has sparked significant online interest. For those unaware, Acharya Pramod Krishnam holds a revered position as Peethadhishwar at the Kalki Dham.
Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD lands in legal trouble
Based on ANI’s report, Acharya Pramod Krishnam stated that the film has offended the religious feelings of Hindus. He stressed that India is deeply connected to emotions, belief, and devotion, and the sacred principles of Sanatana Dharma should be respected.
He firmly believes that the sacred texts of Sanatana, specifically those related to Lord Kalki Narayan as the last avatar of Lord Vishnu, should not be changed. He cited abundant literature about Kalki in the Puranas and recalled the recent event on February 19, 2023, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the construction of Shri Kalki Dham.
The man argued that the movie goes against the depictions in Hindu sacred texts, potentially causing religious harm. Furthermore, he mentioned that filmmakers often disregard Hindu sensitivities by presenting saints in a negative light. While expressive freedom is valuable, it should not undermine religious beliefs.
“According to our sacred texts, this movie contradicts the established beliefs. The movie is causing offense to our religious sensitivities. We have raised concerns and are expecting a resolution. Maligning Hindu saints for entertainment is an unfortunate trend in filmmaking today. Artistic freedom should not be misused to disrespect our faith,” Acharya Pramod Krishnam shared with ANI.
What else is mentioned in Acharya Pramod’s notice?
According to ANI’s report, Ujjawal Anand Sharma, a top Indian Supreme Court lawyer, delivered a legal warning on behalf of Acharya Pramod. The notice alleges that the film distorts the portrayal of Lord Kalki as described in Hindu holy texts, and therefore disrespects these revered scriptures.
I have seen firsthand how deeply rooted Hindu mythology and ethos are in the lives of many devout Hindus. The depiction being referred to here has already caused confusion and has the potential to irreparably damage the revered image of Lord Kalki in their hearts and minds. This, in turn, could lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations that could gradually erode the Hindu faith. As someone who has grown up immersed in Hindu culture, I can only imagine the distress this would cause not just for my client but also for the wider Hindu community. The faith and religious sentiments of millions could be affected by such actions, making it a matter of great concern.
In the year 2898 AD, Kalki is a film helmed by Nag Ashwin. This intriguing production boasts an illustrious ensemble consisting of Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Prabhas, Disha Patani, and more notable actors. Vijay Deverakonda, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mrunal Thakur make brief appearances in cameo roles. Kalki made its grand entrance into cinemas on June 27.
