I have had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary talent and charisma of Kalpana Ranjani throughout her illustrious career. Her magnetic presence on screen and versatile performances captivated audiences, making her an exceptional actress in the South Indian film industry.

Kalpana Ranjani wasn’t your typical actress; she possessed extraordinary talent that left audiences enchanted by her varied acting skills. Her beauty was breathtaking, and her abilities went beyond the ordinary. This renowned actress made a significant mark in the Malayalam film industry and earned the National Award as a testament to her success.

Who is Kalpana Ranjani?

On October 5, 1965, Kalpana Ranjani entered the world with the name Kalpana Priyadarsini. She is one of the three daughters of theater artists Chavara VP Nair and Vijayalakshmi.

I have come across many fascinating figures in the world of cinema, but Kalpana’s story stands out as truly inspiring. This brilliant actress, with her radiant presence, has two sisters, Kalaranjini and Urvashi, and two brothers, Prince Nair and Kamal Roy, making for a lively household. Her acting prowess is undeniable, having graced the screens in over 300 films across various South Indian languages.

I became known for my humorous roles in movies, which surprisingly gained me a large fanbase, despite my original aspiration to play lead characters. In the early 80s, under the skilled direction of G. Aravindan, I made my debut in Pokkuveyil (1980). Following this breakthrough role, I went on to contribute to several critically and commercially successful films.

Kalpana Ranjani’s marriage

In 1998, the well-known actress, Kalpana, tied the knot with Malayalam movie director Anil Kumar. Sadly, their marriage didn’t last long and they went through a divorce in 2012. Together, they share a lovely daughter named Sreemayi.

Kalpana Ranjani’s rivalry with sister

Kalpana Ranjani was not on very good terms with her younger sister and actress Urvashi. 

Since I was young, Kalpana took charge of making decisions for me. It was normal for us to have disagreements and makeups. As her younger sister, I followed her lead in everything. However, we grew apart when I independently made a decision concerning a personal matter without consulting her.

According to rumors, Urvashi’s ascendancy in films reportedly affected Kalpana’s chances of being cast as a heroine. As filmmakers favored Urvashi due to her adherence to traditional beauty norms, the sisters found themselves in competition.

Following Kalpana’s unfortunate demise, Urvashi shared her regret over not resolving some matters with her deceased actress-sister earlier. They had intended to meet and discuss these issues in person, but unfortunately, Urvashi learned of Kalpana’s passing only the day prior.

Kalpana Ranjani’s death

Tragically and before her time, Kalpana Ranjani lost her life. At the age of 50, she succumbed to her fate on January 25, 2016. While in Hyderabad for the filming of Oopiri / Thozha, Karthi’s movie, Kalpana was discovered unresponsive in her hotel room by the crew. Despite their swift efforts to get her medical help, she passed away en route to the hospital due to a heart attack.

It’s sad and regrettable that Kalpana passed away, but it’s important to note that she died pursuing her passion – acting and performing.

The actress is not with us physically, but her legacy shall continue forever.
