Dulquer Salmaan, born to acting legend Mammootty, entered the film industry in 2012 with Srinath Rajendran’s directorial debut, “Second Show.” Prior to joining films, he spent time in a Dubai IT company but left due to the tedium of corporate life.

In an unconventional start to his acting career in Malayalam films, DQ first appeared on screen alongside a group of newcomers in an action crime production. Subsequently, he gave a standout performance as the lead actor in Ustad Hotel, a critically acclaimed film directed by Anwar Rasheed and scripted by Anjali Menon.

In the same year, the actor acted as the main character in Theevram, but the film didn’t perform well in the cinemas. After that, he teamed up with director Martin Prakkat for the first time to make ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi. Additionally, this movie marked his debut as a playback singer, where he sang the song “Johnny Mone Johnny.”

In 2013, the actor gave standout performances in films such as “Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi,” a road film, and “Pattam Pole,” his first full-length romantic role alongside Malavika Mohanan. Additionally, he appeared in the segment titled “Kullante Bharya” of the anthology movie, “5 Sundarikal.”

Starting in 2014, the actor made his first appearance in Tamil films through the bilingual production Vaayai Moodi Pesavum, also known as Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram in Malayalam cinemas. The Tamil version was warmly received by viewers, but unfortunately, the Malayalam version did not fare as well.

In his next project, the actor worked together with debutant director Anjali Menon on the critically acclaimed film “Banglore Days.” He portrayed a fiery and defiant character in this ensemble production, which also starred Nivin Pauly, Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya Nazim, and Parvathy Thiruvothu in pivotal roles. The result was one of the highest-earning Malayalam films to date.

In Malayalam films following Vikramadithyan and Njaan, Dulquer Salmaan proved his acting skills. He began 2015 with two heartfelt romantic movies. One was “100 Days of Love” directed by Jenuse Mohammed, and the other was “O Kadhal Kanmani,” a timeless classic from Mani Ratnam. Nithya Menen starred in both productions, and “O Kadhal Kanmani” continues to be cherished by romance film enthusiasts and admirers of Mani Ratnam’s work.

Despite wrapping up the year with a low-key start, DQ experienced a remarkable turnaround. He portrayed the quirky and carefree character in the movie “Charlie,” which brought him his first Kerala State Award for Best Actor. Not only that, but this successful film was remade in Marathi as “Deva” and Tamil as “Maara.”

Between the years 2016 and 2017, Dulquer appeared in various Malayalam films such as Kali, Kammatipaadam, Jomonte Suvisheshangal, Comrade in America (CIA), and Solo, which was directed by Bejoy Nambiar. However, starting from 2018, Dulquer made a successful transition into Telugu cinema with the film Mahanati where he played the role of Gemini Ganesan opposite Keerthy Suresh.

Dulquer Salmaan gained broader recognition after the acclaimed success of Nag Ashwin’s direction, making his filmography more diverse than before. In the same year, he made his debut in Hindi films through Karwaan alongside Irrfan Khan. Over the past few years, Dulquer has left a mark in various film industries with his movies like Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal, Varane Avashyamund, and Sita Ramam.

Among his latest projects are “Chup: Revenge of the Artist” and the intriguing Netflix series, “Guns & Gulaabs.” This talented artist last graced the Malayalam film industry with his presence in “King of Kotha,” and left us wanting more with a cameo role in Prabhas’s “Kalki 2898 AD.” Now, I eagerly anticipate his lead role in the upcoming movie, “Lucky Baskhar!” The suspense is killing me!
