Bedrock: Adult Flintstones TV Show Canceled at Fox

As a longtime fan of The Flintstones and someone who has fond memories of watching reruns of the classic cartoon series growing up, I was really looking forward to seeing how Elizabeth Banks and her team were going to breathe new life into Bedrock with this adult-animated adaptation. The idea of catching up with Fred, Wilma, Barney, and the rest of the gang two decades later and exploring their careers and personal lives in a modern context was intriguing.

Approximately a year ago, Fox gave the green light to Elizabeth Banks’ “Bedrock” adult animation based on The Flintstones. However, this project is no longer progressing at Fox now.

“The animated comedy series about the Flintstone family follows their lives two decades later. Fred is approaching retirement age, while Pebbles, now in her twenties, starts her career. As Bedrock transitions from Stone Age to Bronze Age, its residents will find this progress harder than usual.”

Currently, Fox hasn’t announced any intentions to sell the show to other television channels. But based on TVLine’s report, there’s a possibility that Fox may consider reviving Bedrock again in the future. Originally, Mary-Kate Alfonso was set to produce and provide the voice for a modernized Pebbles character.

Who was involved in Bedrock?

Instead of Bank’s production, the scrapped Bedrock series would have showcased the vocal talents of Stephen Root as Fred, Amy Sedaris as Wilma, Nicole Byer as Betty, Joe Lo Truglio as Barney, and Manny Jacinto as Bamm-Bamm. Executive produced by Banks, Kerns, Zimmet, Handelman, Register, and Warner Bros. Television Group, this project was a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Fox Entertainment.

The Flintstones’ Bedrock would have been the site of a new TV adaptation of the beloved Hanna-Barbera sitcom, which originally ran for six seasons from 1960 to 1966. This classic show gave birth to nine animated spin-offs throughout the years, including “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show” in 1971, as well as two live-action movies.
