Girls5eva, One Day, and the 3 most egregious Netflix Emmy snubs of 2024

As a dedicated gamer and television enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the highs of witnessing beloved shows receive multiple Emmy nominations to the lows of seeing deserving series get overlooked time and again. This year’s Emmy Award nominations brought a mix of excitement and disappointment, as some shows and performers received well-deserved recognition while others were left empty-handed.

Each time the Emmy Award nominees are unveiled, TV enthusiasts can hardly contain their eagerness. They eagerly anticipate the complete roster, filled with hope that their beloved shows and actors will be recognized. Conversely, a sense of letdown ensues when their favorites fail to secure a nomination.

In 2021, Netflix garnered more nominations than any other streaming platform or broadcasting channel, with a grand total of 107. However, not all of its deserving content and actors received recognition for the top accolades. Amongst these nominations, “The Crown,” “Ripley,” and “Baby Reindeer” were Netflix’s most successful series in terms of nominations. Consequently, there were fewer opportunities for other shows and performers to shine due to the intense competition.

As a huge fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when my favorite shows and actors aren’t recognized with award nominations. It’s natural to want to see the greatness of “Girls5eva” and its talented cast, the captivating duo from “One Day,” and Theo James in “The Gentlemen” celebrated and acknowledged. However, lacking an Emmy or any other award nomination doesn’t diminish the value of their hard work or the impact they’ve had on audiences like me.

Girls5eva and its cast

Luckily, Girls5eva received two Emmy nods in 2021: one for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series and another for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, penned by Sara Bareilles for her song “The Medium Time.” The accolades acknowledge the show’s exceptional writing and music. Nevertheless, the most remarkable aspect of Girls5eva remains its brilliant cast. I can’t fathom how this series has managed to avoid a nomination for Renée Elise Goldsberry until now.

As a longtime Emmy Awards viewer and an avid fan of TV shows, I can’t help but feel frustrated every year when deserving casts get overlooked in favor of individual nominations. Having grown up watching iconic ensembles like the one from “Cheers,” I’ve come to appreciate the magic that happens when a group of talented actors comes together to create something truly special.

Girls5eva was just as deserving as the eight comedy series that got nominated. In fact, some might argue that it’s even funnier in a classic and timeless way. But I’ll keep my thoughts to myself for now.

Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall in One Day

Although “One Day,” the limited series adapted from the book of the same name, was impressive, I believe it had little chance of receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series compared to “Baby Reindeer,” “Fargo,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Ripley,” and “True Detective: Night Country.” The show’s 12-episode length and weaker overall performance might have made it seem less competitive to Emmy voters.

Amibka Mod and Leo Woodall deserved recognition as serious contenders in the Limited Series acting categories. The competition is extremely tough with an abundance of famous film actors joining the series scene. Nevertheless, the duo’s portrayal of Em and Dex was nothing short of brilliant. Each brought depth and emotion to their individual roles and together, they created a powerful impact. Let us not forget their outstanding performances despite the snubs.

The Gentlemen and Theo James

In contrast to “One Day” on Netflix, “The Gentlemen” managed to secure three nominations for stunt work, production design, and Guy Ritchie’s direction. Unfortunately, none of the show’s actors nor the series itself earned any nominations. This could be due to the fact that the show was entered in the comedy category, but it may not have fared much better as a drama contender.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about Theo James’ Emmy journey. Last year, he earned his first nomination for his role in HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Now, just one year later, he was up for another nomination! This time around, I truly believed he deserved recognition in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category.

What was the worst snub at the Emmy nominations this year?
