Fairy Tail: Irene’s relationship with Erza explained

I, Irene, once lived a tranquil life as queen in the land of Dragonof, where humans and dragons coexisted in harmony. Nurturing my children, Erza Scarlet, and the powerful fairy tails, I took pride in our peaceful existence. But one fateful day, I was shattered to learn of a sinister plot by the western dragons to evade us. Determined to protect my people, I rallied their spirits with words of hope and unity. Yet, treachery lurked within my own borders as some dragons turned against me, threatening to disrupt our fragile peace.

Instead, Irene’s trusted companion and wise dragon, Belserion, joined the battle by her side. By harnessing some of Belserion’s magical powers, Irene became the first dragon slayer. Consequently, she managed to subdue the dragons. Regrettably, Irene inadvertently transformed into a dragon herself.

I was once married to a man who became consumed by fear, believing I might transform into the monstrous figure of Acnologia. Desperate to prevent this supposed transformation, he locked me away and labeled me as the monster. Despite my attempts to reveal our unborn child to him, he chose instead to inflict pain and suffering upon me, refusing to listen or acknowledge our growing family.

Using sorcery, Irene halts her pregnancy to keep her unborn child from entering the world. To shield her baby, she transforms into a dragon, unwittingly slaying her spouse in the midst of this metamorphosis. For a century, Irene resided as a dragon due to Zeref’s intervention, only later reverting back to her human form. However, her dragon physiology continued to afflict her, driving her to the brink of insanity. In desperation, she seeks to employ her child, Erza, in an attempt to restore her human body.

Despite Erza’s expression, Irene relinquished her intentions and left her at the church. Her affection for Erza was strong, but her fear of the unknown caused her to let go. This was evident in their future encounters, as she opted to end her own life instead of inflicting harm on Erza.
