Microsoft job listing for Gears of War stokes the PlayStation release rumours

As a long-time gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t hide my excitement about the potential release of Gears of War: E-Day on PlayStation. The Coalition, Microsoft’s first-party studio responsible for the franchise since 2014, has been dropping hints that this could be a reality.

The Coalition is one of the first-party studios beneath Microsoft and Xbox. It has been responsible for Gears of War since Microsoft acquired the rights in 2014, and it also supported development on Halo: Infinite in 2021. Now, it’s gearing up for Gears of War: E-Day, and it’s very possible that PlayStation is going to be one of the recipient platforms.

According to a job announcement on Microsoft’s career site (I appreciate your contribution, Cappuccino2000 from Reddit), The Coalition is seeking a Senior Online Client Engineer for an undisclosed Gears project. A prerequisite for this role is having experience with Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, or any other online gaming platforms. However, the use of ‘or’ implies that expertise in PlayStation network engineering isn’t compulsory, although the focus on specific networking platforms may imply otherwise.

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has been openly discussing bringing Xbox games to other platforms lately. The project code-named “Project Latitude” is no longer just a rumor, and it’s reasonable to expect that popular Xbox franchises like Halo will eventually appear on PlayStation. Given this context, the inclusion of PSN (PlayStation Network) expertise in a Microsoft job posting implies a more specialized role rather than just general experience.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve heard from Jeff Grubb through VGC that there’s another potential franchise contender under consideration for the next entry in the Halo Infinite campaign. It’s essential to note that this doesn’t guarantee it will come to fruition, but discussions are ongoing, and it’s none other than Gears of War. If we were to bridge the gap between Green and Blue teams in E-Day, a prequel focusing on the origins of Gears would be an excellent choice.

As a dedicated Gears of War fan and gamer, I can’t help but notice that there haven’t been too many mainline entries in the series since The Coalition took over. We did get Gears of War 4 in 2016 and its successor, Gears 5, in 2019. However, what really has me excited is their upcoming project, E-Day. With the transition to Unreal Engine 5, this ambitious undertaking promises to be a game-changer for the franchise. And if they manage to bring it to PlayStation as well, that would be the cherry on top!
