Naruto: The Sharingan Explained

As a long-time fan of Naruto, I’ve been fascinated by the various Kekkei Genkai, or clan-specific abilities, that have graced the pages of this captivating manga and anime. Amongst them all, the Sharingan has always stood out to me for its unique powers and the depth of emotion attached to those who wield it.

In Naruto’s intriguing universe, various cultures and skills are showcased. Among the most formidable abilities are the “eye techniques” or “Dojutsu” (Japanese for “method of the eye”). The potential uses of these techniques can be overwhelming due to their complexity and vast possibilities. Of all these, the Sharingan is arguably the most intricate and challenging to comprehend. That’s why we’re here to make things clearer for you.

The Sharingan – What Is That?

As an avid fan, I’d argue that nothing beats the legendary allure of the Uchiha’s Sharingan. For me, as a member of the esteemed Uchiha clan, experiencing deep emotions triggers its initial awakening in me.

Sasuke, for example, awakened his Sharingan after witnessing the death of his clan and Obito got his eyes due to his immense resolve to protect his teammates in the third great ninja war.

The base Sharingan has three stages, which are visible through the numbers of Tomoe in the eye.

As a dedicated fan, I’d describe the Sharingan’s capabilities in this way: With each use, this remarkable ability enhances my vision, allowing me to dodge attacks with uncanny precision and even steal enemies’ jutsu. Additionally, it grants me the power to cast illusions that can leave individuals disoriented or under my control.

However, the Uchiha possess two more formidable skills, which are strictly off-limits for their usage. These abilities are referred to as Izanagi and Izanami.

As a devoted fan of Izanagi, I’d describe it as having the power to rewrite the fabric of reality. Imagine, in the heat of battle as a Sharingan user, you take a fatal blow and get stabbed. But with Izanagi at your disposal, you can make that moment of getting wounded an illusion that never truly occurred. In essence, it allows you to erase the consequences of that attack, keeping you unharmed.

“The downside to this method is that the Sharingan, once utilized for Izanagi, will no longer hold any power.”

Iatanami allows its user to capture the reality between two specified instances in time.

The victim will find themselves caught in a repeating delusion, where the events from moment A to moment B play out over and over again.

With this method, the victim has no control or ability to resist, but the user’s Sharingan eventually disappears too.

But wait, there’s more!

The Mangekyou Sharingan

The Sharingan reaches its peak, or maxima form, when the user undergoes an intense emotional upheaval such as the loss of a dear one through death.

Each user of the Mangekyou Sharingan has distinct designs and capabilities for this eye mark. A commonality among them is the use of the Susano’o technique.

The Susano’o is a massive armor made of chakra that has incredible durability and offensive capabilities. It can devastate armies and withstand damage that would normally destroy cities.

The primary disadvantage of wielding the Mangekyou Sharingan is that, over time and with heavy usage, the user’s eyes will gradually lose their sight and power. Unlike the Izanagi and Izanami dojos, this condition does not occur immediately.

To gain a clear comprehension of the extent of power held by these eyes, it’s essential to examine the extraordinary capabilities exhibited by recognized users of the Mangekyou Sharingan in Naruto.

Itachi And His Sharingan

Itachi’s Mangekyou Sharingan posesses two abilities that are distinct from one another.

The first is the Amaterasu, an inextinguishable black flame that burns for seven days.

An alternative is “The other one is called Tsukuyomi, renowned as one of the most potent illusion techniques in the Naruto realm.”

As a gamer, when I face off against Itachi’s character, and our eyes lock, I find myself ensnared in an illusory realm where he holds the reins of space and time.

Kakashi, being an elite ninja, found himself unwittingly ensnared in this technique and slipped into a prolonged unconscious state for several weeks. To his companions, it appeared as if only moments had passed, but in reality, Kakashi endured agonizing torment within Itachi’s illusion for three entire days.

Sasuke And His Sharingan

As a devoted fan, I’d put it this way: Sasuke holds an incredible arsenal of powers. He can summon Amaterasu, but his unique skill, Inferno Style: Flame Control or Enton: Kagutsuchi, complements the black flame with impressive control over infernos.

Sasuke has the ability to mold Amaterasu’s flames according to his desires, granting him greater flexibility than Itachi’s use of the flame technique.

As a devoted fan, I’d describe it this way: I believe Sasuke possesses a distinctive chakra nature all his own. He’s blended it with an impressive array of his other skills, such as the Chidori technique.

Obito And His Sharingan

Obito employs the enigmatic ability of the Kamui in his two eyes. The capacity of his right eye allows him to transfer not only himself but also tangible objects or individuals within his reach into an alternate dimension, thereby rendering himself intangible and invulnerable to assaults.

The eye on his left side, which he passed on to Kakashi, has the power to bring distant objects or individuals into a pocket dimension. This unique ability was only fully demonstrated in the series when Kakashi utilized both of his eyes for a brief moment.

Kamui, when fully activated, holds the greatest power among all Ninjutsu techniques in Naruto.

Shisui And His Sharingan

As a huge fan, I can tell you that while not much is publicly known about Shisui’s second ability, what we do know leaves me in awe. This isn’t just any Genjutsu; it’s the pinnacle of this mystical ninja art in all of Naruto. The Kotoamatsukami, to put it simply, is a mesmerizing and profoundly powerful form of Genjutsu that leaves its victims completely under Shisui’s control.

The user gains full command over the affected individual. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Itachi utilized Shisui’s eye on himself to regain autonomy from Kabuto’s influence.

Based on my personal experience and observations, I strongly believe that any powerful ability or gift comes with a significant limitation. I’ve seen it countless times throughout my life. When someone is blessed with an extraordinary talent or power, there’s always a catch. And from what you’ve shared, it seems the same rule applies here.

Based on my extensive knowledge and love for the Naruto universe, I firmly believe that the Sharingan is the most powerful Kekkei Genkai (Natural Energy Technique) in the series. Having closely followed the development of various ninja techniques throughout the storyline, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the Sharingan’s abilities have evolved and transformed its wielders into formidable opponents.
