As a die-hard fan of Indian horror films, I have been eagerly anticipating Aditya Sarpotdar’s latest offering, Kakuda. Having been captivated by his previous film Munjya, I was excited to see how he would blend horror and comedy once again. With an impressive cast featuring Sonakshi Sinha, Riteish Deshmukh, and Saqeeb Saleem, I had high expectations for this unique folklore-inspired tale.
Following the massive box office hit “Munjya,” director Aditya Sarpotdar presented audiences with another production titled “Kakuda” (released on July 12, 2024). Starring an impressive cast including Sonakshi Sinha, Riteish Deshmukh, and Saqeeb Saleem, this horror comedy is infused with folklore elements. The plot centers around the curse of Kakuda, where men in the household develop a hunchback if they fail to adhere to specific rules.
I’m excited to share with you a story where I, along with my partner-in-paranormal-crimes Victor Jacobs (Riteish Deshmukh), embark on an intriguing journey to lift a curse tormenting my beloved husband (Saqeeb Saleem). As fellow fans immerse themselves in this captivating new film, here’s a list of movies that resonate with the same supernatural theme:
Munjya
Previously, before creating Kakuda for ZEE5, director Aditya Sarpotdar brought us the successful movie Munjya. Starring Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Varma, among others, this film centers around a malevolent ghost whose desire remains unmet. The ghost manipulates Abhay Varma’s naive character to bring about its wish. Catchy tunes, a special appearance by Varun Dhawan, and extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) contribute to the film’s impressive box office revenue in the recent supernatural genre.
Stree
Streaming Platform: Disney+ Hotstar
I’ve had the chance to experience Amar Kaushik’s masterpiece, Stree, firsthand. Starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, this trailblazing horror-comedy revolves around an urban legend of a vengeful female spirit. It’s a unique blend of chills and laughter that has raised the bar for Indian horror comedies. The film’s memorable one-liners and standout performances make it a must-watch for any horror comedy fan. As the tagline “Mard ko dard hoga” hints, Stree expertly combines fear with humor. And guess what? We get to enjoy more of this thrilling ride with the upcoming release of Stree 2!
Roohi
Streaming Platform: Netflix
I’m thrilled about how well Stree performed at the box office, and now the same talented team is back with another horror-comedy gem called Roohi. As a dedicated gamer and movie lover, I can’t wait to see this one unfold on the big screen. Directed by Hardik Mehta, it boasts an impressive cast consisting of Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor, and Varun Sharma.
Ghost Stories
Streaming Platform: Netflix
Four distinctive short horror tales are brought to life in the anthology film “Ghost Stories,” helmed by acclaimed Indian directors such as Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Anurag Kashyap. These chilling stories infuse horror with a unique brand of dark humor, making it an essential watch for horror enthusiasts.
In an anthology series on Netflix, you’ll find various types of horror stories – some that play with your mind through psychological twists and others that give you goosebumps with supernatural frights. Notable actors including Mrunal Thakur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Gulshan Deviah, and Janhvi Kapoor grace the screens in these productions.
Bulbbul
Streaming Platform: Netflix
In the late 1800s in Bengal, Anvita Dutt’s first film as a director, titled Bulbul, introduces us to a young bride named Bulbbul, portrayed by Triptii Dimri. At a tender age, she is wedded to an older gentleman, Indranil, played by Rahul Bose. Over time, Bulbbul evolves from an uninhibited, joyful girl who delights in tree-climbing into a submissive, dutiful wife residing in a magnificent estate.
As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: In my family, there’s my mentally challenged twin brother Mahendra, portrayed by Bose, his wife Binodini (Paoli Dam), and my younger brother Satya (Avinash Tiwary). We go through a terrible ordeal that sets the stage for an unexpected twist. The film then dives into a feminist perspective intertwined with supernatural elements in a chilling gothic setting. This unique blend of themes makes it a must-watch in the horror genre.
Kakuda significantly boosted the appeal of horror-comedy films in India. After its successful debut on ZEE5 Global, fans of this genre have much to anticipate. Each film offers a distinct approach to blending horror and comedy, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoyed Kakuda. Regardless of whether you’re in the mood for a spooky ghost tale, a chilling supernatural thriller, or a humorous take on fear, this collection caters to every horror-comedy enthusiast.
