As a seasoned crypto investor, I’ve seen my fair share of new projects and announcements. However, EigenLayer’s latest developments have piqued my interest. The introduction of the EIGEN token and the plans for an airdrop, coupled with their innovative mechanism to address intersubjective faults, mark a significant step forward in the crypto ecosystem.
EigenLayer, a decentralized staking protocol based on Ethereum (ETH), has recently unveiled some major updates, opening up opportunities for innovative advancements in the cryptocurrency sector.
The protocol unveiled its native token, EIGEN, which the newly formed Eigen Foundation will distribute. Alongside this, EigenLayer introduced a major plan for an airdrop and released a comprehensive new Whitepaper.
EigenLayer Unveils EIGEN With Novel Mechanism
As a crypto investor, I understand that the new EIGEN token introduction in the protocol is intended to solve issues that cannot be addressed through Ethereum staking alone. These problems are referred to as “intersubjective” faults, which require an additional mechanism for resolution.
In my perspective, by broadening Ethereum’s staking capabilities through EigenLayer, Ethereum is positioned to function as the Universal Objective Work Token. Meanwhile, EIGEN emerges as the Universal Intersubjective Work Token due to its universality. The goal of EIGEN’s universality is reportedly to enable it to detect and correct intersubjective errors made by stakers within any Automated Verification System (AVS) in the protocol through forking and slashing mechanisms.
To promote extensive use of EIGEN in various applications, EigenLayer has engineered a mechanism independent of specific applications for preserving the cryptoeconomic security of the system.
In EigenLayer, the functions of EIGEN staking and Ethereum (ETH) restaking serve to enhance each other’s effectiveness. EIGEN staking focuses on ensuring safety properties by employing objective slashing. On the other hand, ETH restaking is responsible for maintaining liveness and censorship-resistance, with its effectiveness influenced by the degree of stake decentralization.
As an analyst, I would rephrase that as: With the rollout of EIGEN, intersubjective staking makes its debut in our protocol, signaling a substantial advancement for both EIGEN and Ethereum’s broader ecosystem. Nonetheless, given the novelty of this concept, it is essential that we foster widespread adoption and engagement from the community to fully realize its potential.
Upon its debut, the Eigen token will be issued with a grand total of 1.67 billion units. Of this amount, the Foundation will earmark a significant portion, equating to 45%, for distribution within the community. This allocation is further segmented into three distinct categories: staked rewards, community projects, and ecosystem expansion.
According to reports, investors are expected to obtain approximately 30% of the tokens, while early backers will secure more than 25%. A vesting period of three years applies to the token allotments for both categories.
During the initial year, a full lockdown will keep investments secured. Subsequently, the restrictions will ease, allowing for a 4% monthly reduction of the total holdings over the next two years.
EIGEN Token Launches Meta-Setup Phase
The early stage of subjective staking at launch represents just a portion of the complete protocol. However, there are several key factors that remain undetermined before we can fully activate and reap the benefits of the staking mechanism.
EIGEN is initiating a meta-setup stage, inviting researchers, specialists, and the general public to participate in open discussions about this topic.
According to EigenLayer’s recent announcement, this joint initiative strives to establish the essential conditions that will optimally integrate the protocol into the Ethereum network and enhance their mutual functionality.
