911: Lone Star season 5, episode 3 recap and review: "C12"

As a seasoned firefighter with years of experience under my belt, I must say that this week’s episode of 911: Lone Star was quite the rollercoaster ride! The storyline about the boy trapped in a tanker was particularly gripping; it brought back memories of countless hours spent searching for victims in burning buildings.

The stakes were high with the spreading chlorine gas in the town during 911: Lone Star’s fifth season, episode 3. Let’s delve into the events that unfolded in this gripping installment.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 3.

In the following scene, we find ourselves right where we left off in the last episode, marked by a massive explosion. Remarkably, the firefighting team 126 emerged unscathed; however, there was an even more pressing problem. One of the tanks began leaking chlorine gas.

The situation seemed dire for several characters, and undoubtedly, some wounds will be tended to in future installments. What particularly worries us, as suggested by the previews, is the fate of Tommy, TK, and Nancy. Will they survive the ordeal at the school?

Marjan stops the chlorine gas in 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 3

The primary issue for the 126 is preventing gas from escaping. Fortunately, they have sufficient materials from the train to patch up the leak. However, they must make their solutions as airtight as possible, which will require a generous amount of duct tape. It seems like a straightforward solution, and we’re confident that it could work in practice.

Despite the consequences, Marjan finds herself in a sticky situation. She ends up dealing with a strong release of gas while sealing off an opening, which leaves her with chemical burns on her hands. Disregarding orders, she acted bravely – a move that Owen can’t help but sympathize with, as he later does the same thing himself. The question remains whether Marjan’s actions will jeopardize her chances of becoming a lieutenant. It’s crucial for the show to address her injuries properly, as chemical burns require attention and should be depicted in future episodes.

Tommy, TK, and Nancy get stuck in a school

The advertisement left no doubt that the lives of our beloved paramedics were at stake. This plot point echoed the initial episode where a child was found near some trees, and a woman with bloodshot eyes suddenly emerged from the undergrowth. Interestingly enough, this woman reappeared as the character from the second episode. She popped out to alert the child, but in doing so, she unintentionally frightened him.

As chlorine gas approached the school, everyone was safely evacuated. Yet, Tommy, TK, and Nancy were summoned due to chemical burns on a boy’s arm. It seems that Nancy discovered the burns resembled a palm print. Eventually, someone took heed of the boy’s tales about a creature in the forest. He was adamant about what he witnessed. This entity, as he described, was a female figure.

It brings us to the reason Tommy, TK, and Nancy are stuck in the evacuated school. They went out looking for the woman. Sadly, it’s all for nothing. While they find the woman, she’s suffering too much from the chlorine gas. Tommy does the humane thing, giving her a larger dose of morphine. TK initially questions her dosage, but then he realizes what she’s doing. There is no saving this woman at this point, and they can’t let her suffer. We do get an update on what chlorine does to the body through a news report, and what that reporter was going through sounded excruciating.

As a gamer, I found myself in a frustrating situation where my actions led to the paramedics being trapped within the school. A poignant moment followed as Tommy had to make a distressing call to dispatch, seeking guidance after the unfortunate loss of life. Yet, it all seemed futile. The wind shifted unexpectedly, causing the gas that filled the room to miraculously move away – a turn of events that didn’t sit right with me. It was almost unbelievable that the gas would simply retreat from the room like that, leaving no trace at the door.

The 126 finally finds the boy from the train

So far in this thrilling tale, I’ve been focusing on various characters, but there’s one boy who deserves mention – the one who leapt onto the train to reunite with his brother. Incredibly, from the start of the story right up until nearly halfway through, no one managed to find him. In a surprising turn of events, while Paul was meticulously cleaning Marjan’s hands, he noticed a distinctive baseball cap. This discovery led him to suspect that someone else was hiding in the shadows.

In a tanker brimming with liquid, a young lad finds himself in peril. The team of 126 springs into action to rescue him, right as he receives a call from his brother. A heartwarming scene unfolds as Owen vows to go above and beyond to ensure the boy’s safe escape. True to his word, when the wind shifts and the gas cloud approaches the train again, Owen remains while others are instructed to evacuate.

In an unexpected turn of events, there came a car horn blare and a collision with the train carriage. Did the truck marked 126 retreat? Nope! Instead, Judd rushed to the scene and skillfully moved the train carriage out of the path of the gas cloud. Frankly, this incident seemed too serendipitous and peculiar. The truck showed minimal damage, and its owner appeared unconcerned. Nothing about this episode made sense, leaving it rather unexciting due to the confusion.

A new lieutenant is finally chosen in 911: Lone Star

Following this episode, the 126 family has reunited once more. However, Judd isn’t coming back in his role as a lieutenant; instead, he’s set to rejoin the team as a rookie again, given his extended absence.

It remains unclear who the lieutenant will be, as Owen has a name noted but we don’t learn his identity. Marjan clarifies that she is willing to charge into danger, but only until the objective is achieved. If not for Paul’s vigilance, that boy would have perished. She proposes that he should take on the role of lieutenant, and Owen concurs.

While everyone is enjoying themselves, Owen leans close to Marjan to share a secret. Will we ever discover what he said? I’m not certain. It does make me curious if Owen had written Marjan’s name down but ultimately changed his mind, as he didn’t seem to view the situation in the same way that Paul did. Despite their differences, Marjan and Owen share many similarities.

Tommy agrees to meet Trevor’s ex-wife

Ultimately, we’re dealing with the dilemma surrounding Tommy and Trevor. I can’t help but feel frustrated that she’s willing to meet Cassandra now, as it inevitably involves subjecting her daughters to questioning. Yet, I acknowledge her perspective given her brush with death. She wants to know who’s caring for her daughters, so it makes sense that Cassandra would want the same information regarding Melodie.

I’m merely expressing my hope that she firmly reprimands Cassandra when it comes to discussing the twins. After all, they were brought up with great respect, and they’ve shown remarkable restraint in the face of Trevor and their father’s sudden passing. Therefore, there seems to be no valid reason for Cassandra to speak negatively about them during one meeting. Here’s hoping Tommy defends his daughters accordingly.

What I’m hoping for in this current season is to witness more of Carlos actively involved. So far, he’s appeared primarily as the lunch/donut deliverer and babysitter. Since we know his main goal is tracking down his father’s killer, it would be great if we could see him engaged in his work more, or better yet, in action more often. The series has faced challenges when it comes to Carlos, and I believe the fifth season offers an opportunity for him to truly stand out.

911: Lone Star airs Mondays at 8/7c on FOX. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
