As a die-hard fan of Tamil cinema, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when I recall the magic that was Mersal, a masterpiece collaboration between the brilliant Atlee and the one and only Thalapathy Vijay. Seven years have passed since its release, yet it continues to resonate with audiences, much like the iconic “cuffed-hands wave” scene that left us spellbound.
In 2017, Atlee and Thalapathy Vijay joined forces for a second time in the hit movie Mersal. As a tribute to the 7-year anniversary of its release, the director shared some nostalgic photos from the filming sessions!
Director Atlee shared a photo on his official social media platforms, featuring him and Thalapathy Vijay. In this image, they are seen enjoying each other’s company during a movie scene shoot, with big smiles on their faces. Furthermore, he posted another picture showcasing him directing the memorable “cuffed-hands wave” sequence from the film.
As I proudly share the first image on Instagram, I find myself reflecting on those special days and the bond we’ve built. I affectionately refer to him as my “Brother,” but to countless fans around the world, he is more than that – he is their “Thalapathy.
Check out the official posts by Atlee for 7 years of Mersal:
In the film “Mersal,” starring Thalapathy Vijay, we follow the tale of two identical brothers, Maaran and Vetri. After the birth of the younger sibling, they become separated. The elder brother continues living a regular life as a doctor, while the other metamorphoses into an avenging magician. This transformative figure seeks retribution against those who unjustly took their father, Vetrimaaran, or Thalapathy, from them.
This film showcases Vijay playing three distinct characters, joined by a strong cast including SJ Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and Nithya Menen in key roles. It was an enormous success in Tamil cinema and generally received favorable critiques. Notably, this movie signified Vijay adopting the title “Thalapathy” instead of his previous one, “Ilayathalapathy.
On the professional side, director Atlee recently worked with Shah Rukh Khan in the movie titled Jawan. Subsequently, he is planning to team up with Salman Khan for a project scheduled in 2025.
Meanwhile, Thalapathy Vijay is now engaged in the production of his upcoming movie, provisionally titled Thalapathy 69. This film, rumored to be the last one for the actor before fully transitioning into politics, is being directed by H Vinoth and stars Bobby Deol and Pooja Hegde as co-stars.
