In this upcoming mid-season update for Season 15, spanning from March 18 to April 21, we’re welcoming a nostalgic return that includes contemporary improvements designed to elevate your gaming experience.
A Nostalgic Revival with Modern Twists
In the 6v6 Open Queue mode, each team comprises six players, recreating the classic structure of two tanks, two damage dealers, and two support characters that many long-time players cherish. This throwback mode now includes Season 15’s new perks, which provide unique enhancements to heroes throughout a match. This blend has proven to be quite favored among the gaming community since its introduction.

For a short while, this gameplay setting will take over the current 5v5 Open Queue, both for ranked and casual play sessions. This switch brings a revitalized approach to combat, allowing players to adapt their strategies or try out different roles as they see fit. In the 6v6 Open Queue, every match presents an opportunity to craft a unique battle experience.
Community Reactions: A Surge of Enthusiasm
The feedback from the community regarding the return of 6v6 play has been incredibly enthusiastic. Numerous gamers have shown renewed enthusiasm for the game, expressing that the blend of the original setup with fresh Perks has rekindled their passion for it.
YouTuber Samito shared his enthusiasm on X:
„Overwatch 2 open queue 6v6 with perks is the most fun I’ve had playing Overwatch in YEARS. This is the way blizzard, this is the way. Perks update without question the best update the Overwatch team has ever made.“
Similarly, streamer Phyerx tweeted:
„I played 6v6 comp for 12 hours today. I fear that was the most fun I’ve ever had on Overwatch 2. If they make this a permanent mode I would honestly come back to Overwatch full time.“
The same sentiments are being expressed in multiple discussion areas and social networking sites, as players push for the long-term reinstatement of the 6v6 format. Many feel that this mode encapsulates what made Overwatch exciting during its initial period, and the introduction of Perks has only served to make it more enjoyable.
In competitive play, the 6 versus 6 format works well, but when it was introduced into quick play, some difficulties emerged. Specifically, Blizzard identified a problem where perks were not functioning in the quick play’s open queue for the 6v6 mode, resulting in an unplanned gameplay experience. Consequently, they have switched back to the 5 versus 5 format in quick play, but emphasized that the 6 versus 6 format is still accessible in competitive play.
As a fan, I’ve noticed that there seems to be a hitch with the Quick Play 6v6 Open Queue, preventing Perks from functioning. In an effort to resolve this issue, we’re temporarily returning to 5v5 matches within Quick Play. However, you can still enjoy the thrill of 6v6 in our Competitive Play mode. Rest assured, we’re working diligently to rectify the problem with the 6v6 mode in Quick Play for a future update.

The Future of 6v6 in Overwatch 2
The overwhelmingly positive response towards the 6v6 gameplay has ignited debates about whether it could become a permanent feature in Overwatch 2. Players often compare this format to successful competitive modes seen in games like Marvel Rivals. The fervor of the gaming community for 6v6, coupled with positive reactions to the Perks system, provides a strong argument for Blizzard to think about including this mode as a regular offering in Overwatch 2.
I’ve been eagerly grinding in the 6v6 Competitive Open Queue since it kicked off, hoping that Blizzard will listen to our pleas and bring this format back permanently. Whether it sticks around as a regular fixture or just for a limited time, its temporary return has definitely reignited my excitement and brought back fond memories of Overwatch gaming days gone by.
