5 vicious little guys in video games

Well now, as a seasoned gamer with more years behind the controller than I care to remember, I’ve seen my fair share of pint-sized powerhouses that leave their larger counterparts in the dust. These diminutive digital denizens, from the cuddly Cinnamon Rolls to the enigmatic Lalafell, possess an uncanny knack for dishing out trouble that belies their petite stature.

If you’ve ever crossed paths with me, my apologies upfront. You may have found that I stand exactly 5 feet tall, making me ideal for certain situations, humorously put. Rest assured, it’s been a long time since I’ve resorted to physical confrontations in such a manner, as my mother strictly forbade me from doing so after I was no longer allowed to defend myself against my brothers that way. However, due to some people’s preconceived notions, they often perceive me as potentially aggressive or menacing, perhaps thinking I might be three small creatures hiding under a trench coat, eagerly seeking an opportunity to bite someone with their sharp teeth. But fear not, I assure you I am harmless and peaceful.

Is it correct? I can’t confirm or deny. Keeping curiosity piqued seems to be an essential skill for survival. Perhaps video games could provide some insights for you, as they are brimming with miniature characters who aren’t shy about showing their strength exceeds their size. Here are five heroes and villains ready to climb onto the shoulders of friends or foes to conquer the world together.

FROG (Chrono Trigger)

Among the most remarkable Role-Playing Games ever created, Chrono Trigger, boasts Frog as one of its cherished characters, who significantly enhances the game’s acclaim. It’s not mere coincidence that Frog, initially known as Glenn, a squire in Chrono Trigger, transformed into the iconic frog we know today. Glenn was an apprentice to Captain Cyrus of Guardia’s “Knights of the Round Table” (a clever play on words). During a conflict with the demon king Magus, the champion, Cyrus, is defeated, and Glenn is tragically cursed to adopt the form and name of a frog. In my initial playthrough in 1995, I gave Frog a new name, Yoshi, due to his long tongue.

A tiny frog, smaller even than mighty swords, wields them effortlessly; unlike humans, these emerald creatures possess an extraordinary leap. This agile amphibian has no trouble reaching elevated positions in battles, a fact known to all – control of the high ground often decides the outcome of a fight.

In a more conversational style, the text could be rephrased as follows: Glenn, the young lad, remains hidden within Frog, and his lingering remorse threatens to overwhelm the noble amphibian with sorrow and malice. Unlike certain other characters in this story, Frog maintains a refined demeanor and doesn’t allow himself to erupt emotionally. Instead, he faces his challenges with grace and determination, wielding a large sword and sporting a pair of muscular thighs that shine brightly. (Do check out the epic finale between Magus and Frog in Chrono Trigger if you haven’t already – it’s quite impressive!)

VAATI (The Legend of Zelda series)

In a previous adventure, instead of the enigmatic “Purple Guy” taking center stage, it was the mischievous and menacing character named Vaati who stole the limelight in “The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.” This purple villain wreaked havoc wherever he went, crushing anyone who dared to oppose his quest for immense dark power. Yet, remarkably, he exudes a certain cuteness that is hard to ignore.

In a nutshell, Vaati is one of the Minish race from the Zelda series. These Minish are little elves who reside among the larger beings in Hyrule, giving them an endearing yet hard-to-intimidate appearance. Despite their peaceful nature, the malevolence lurking within human hearts drew Vaati towards the mastery of dark spells. Now, he aspires for power more than anything else. Oh dear, who’s this mischievous little shoemaker elf with a dark side? Indeed, it’s none other than Vaati!

It seems I could be contributing to the issue. Not surprising that Vaati desires power to outmatch everyone simultaneously.

MARCO (Radiant Historia)

Be cautious about the “Cinnamon Character” across all platforms, meaning the smallest and roundest member among a group of muscular warriors and agile mages. Characters often labeled as Cinnamon Rolls typically maintain an optimistic, friendly demeanor despite enduring significant physical or emotional distress. However, beware: some Cinnamon Rolls possess a trigger that, when activated, unleashes a powerful, explosive response from the seemingly innocent figure.

In the game Radiant Historia, developed by Atlus for the Nintendo DS (why isn’t it available on the Switch?), Marco, who is the smallest swordsman, serves as a loyal companion to the main character, the mercenary Stocke. They reside in a world that is deteriorating, plagued by ecological disasters and political deceit. Human relationships have lost their significance, but despite the harshness of their circumstances, Marco remains optimistic, following closely behind Stocke.

In the game Radiant Historia, the core gameplay involves protagonist Stocke altering the course of history. This results in multiple endings, many of which are unfavorable. One such ending, titled “Simmering Fury,” centers around a character named Marco who has romantic feelings for a spy. When she gets caught, Stocke is put in a difficult position where he must decide between compassion and loyalty, knowing full well the harsh treatment spies receive in prison.

Sometimes overcooked pastry burns, and sometimes it just explodes.

HEISMAY (Metaphor)

As a gamer, I can’t definitively say that the little ninja from Metaphor is this list’s guardian rodent, but I won’t rule it out either. In the medieval world of Metaphor, there’s a secretive race called Heismay – they’re like small bats who barely reach knee-level compared to other creatures. They’re often overlooked and even stepped on, both literally and figuratively. These tiny folks prefer to dwell in secluded villages, avoiding the hustle and bustle of other races as much as possible.

Apart from Heismay, who possesses the booming voice of ten men despite his one-meter height, similar to Frog earlier, Heismay is a reclusive knight whose spirit has been dampened by his sadness stemming from personal catastrophes. When you release Heismay from the protective enclosure he constructed for himself, you’ll acquire a loyal ally, whose might will surely catch the notice of the adversary. Despite his small stature, beware, for you are no match for Eugief’s nimbleness.

THE LALAFELL (Final Fantasy XIV)

Individuals who prefer to play as the Lalafell race in Final Fantasy XIV often have an affinity for watching videos of playful baby interactions, not the violent ones involving weapons. I’m referring to friendly exchanges like open-hand slapping, where everyone enjoys themselves and walks away unharmed. The Lalafells who roam across Eorzea and beyond are good-natured and enjoy a harmless joke or two, engaging in activities such as espionage, playful pranks, and even humorous linkshell calls.

It seems you don’t want to be just another piece in this puppet show, you know? The Lalafells originated when Zodiark’s beloved collectible figurines, the “Precious Moments,” miraculously sprang to life and broke free from the Void. Though it’s a taboo topic for many, I’m not afraid to speak up. Whenever there’s an explosion involving technology or someone gets stabbed in a power play, whether literally or figuratively, you can bet that a Lala is involved in some way.

Want your ultimate proof that small video game characters shouldn’t be messed with? They’re everywhere in the oceanic city-state of Limsa Lominsa. And they all know how to dislocate your hip with a single strike.

Here it is! Cheers to the underdogs and the spark of unpredictability that fuels their dreams. Just because this list doesn’t prove every miniature creature possesses an outsized personality or drive, doesn’t mean we don’t share a common desire – rest. And I have a hunch many of my fellow Hobbits can relate to that sentiment.
