5 shows to watch instead of Election coverage tonight (Nov. 5)

As someone who’s always been captivated by the intricacies of human politics and the thrill of historical dramas, tonight seems to be tailor-made for me. With the real-life election results just a click away, I find myself yearning for an immersive, engaging storyline that keeps my mind off the edge-of-my-seat suspense of actual elections.

This evening is primarily focused on Election Night. Consequently, most broadcast networks are providing live coverage. While it’s a significant event, you’re not obligated to stay tuned for the special programs. You’ve already cast your vote, and you can conveniently check the results on your mobile device. If you prefer, there are other entertaining options to fill your night.

It’s great to know that streaming platforms exist, providing alternatives to traditional broadcast coverage of elections, which you can now avoid if you prefer.

We do recommend remaining on brand for the night, though. Here are five shows to check out.

Gunpowder

Kick-off will be our three-episode HBO production, tied to a significant historical event. In the United Kingdom, November 5th marks Bonfire Night. This occasion honors the arrest and subsequent execution of figures implicated in the Gunpowder Plot, notably Guy Fawkes.

In this retelling, Kit Harington plays Robert Catesby, a disgruntled Catholic aristocrat who has suffered great losses – the death of his wife and father. Enraged by society’s injustices, he believes it’s high time to take drastic action against King James I, replacing him with a fellow Catholic ruler. They devise a plan to detonate Parliament simultaneously, aiming to bring about significant change.

The Boys

Hey there fellow gamer! Ever thought about diving into something with an election twist? Well, if you’re into binge-watching, “The Boys” Season 4 could be right up your alley – but make sure to catch the previous seasons first to fully appreciate the escalating drama. While it’s all about superheroes and vigilantes, this series doesn’t shy away from tackling contemporary issues that keep popping up throughout.

The Boys draws inspiration from its namesake graphic novels, presenting us with a narrative revolving around a band of vigilantes in a universe where superheroes have transformed into celebrity figures, wielding immense power. These vigilantes aspire to bring down each Super individually, but this task proves challenging due to the backing of a global corporation.

Watch The Boys on Prime Video.

Silo

If you’re in the mood for a show that blends political intrigue with a mountain of secrets and mysteries, then “Silo” should be on your list! This series is a must-see, especially for fans of the Wool trilogy by Hugh Howey.

The story unfolds in a secluded silo inhabited by Earth’s remaining inhabitants. Beyond this shelter lies a world ravaged by toxicity and lethality. Those who disobey the community’s rules are expelled with the intention of “sanitizing” cameras, yet they clean because they believe the landscape beyond is picturesque. However, one must question if the world has truly recovered its lush greenery and trees, or if what they see on the silo camera represents reality. This mystery is just one of many that the residents grapple with, as they also attempt to uncover who was responsible for the mayor’s murder.

Silo is available to stream on Apple TV+.

House of Cards

As a gaming enthusiast, if you’re yearning for a political thrill tonight before the results roll in, I’d recommend diving into “House of Cards.” This series kicks off with U.S. Representative Francis Underwood from South Carolina. He’s a man with a thirst for vengeance, as President Garrett Walker reneges on his pledge to appoint Underwood as Secretary of State. It seems that Underwood is too indispensable in Congress to be moved up the ranks.

As Underwood follows his directives, he and his spouse, Claire, devise a plan for retaliation. Their goal is to bring down Walker and his supporters. The concluding season primarily revolves around Claire’s amassing of power.

House of Cards is on Netflix.

South Park

Ultimately, it’s a treat for fans of mature animation! The long-running show, South Park, is airing a political-themed marathon all through the night on Comedy Central.

Should you prefer to avoid political discussions, there’s always the option to delve into one of the 20 captivating seasons of the show. This series will serve as a great escape from some of the day’s pressures and stresses. To fully immerse yourself, consider switching off your phone to disconnect from any conversations about the night, and instead focus on the creative ways Kenny meets his end in each episode.

South Park is available to stream on Max and Paramount+.
