As a dedicated Outlander fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of the series, I must say that season 7, episode 12 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of emotions. While it’s difficult to pinpoint the ‘best’ moments due to the intense drama and character development, there were certainly some standout scenes that left me breathless.
There was a significant amount of action in the twelfth episode of Outlander’s seventh season. Long-hidden truths surfaced, leading to some once solid friendships being shattered. Let’s rewind and highlight the most memorable scenes from this episode.
Not every memorable moment is joyful; some are significant because they deepen a character’s journey or align with plot developments in a novel. To fully appreciate these moments, consider their impact on the narrative as a whole and how they may hint at future events or themes.
In other words, when we label them as “best moments,” these instances are actually intense, exciting, or captivating ones that keep us hooked on the screen.
Lord John Grey goading Jamie Fraser
Readers of the Outlander books had been anticipating this narrative development. We were well aware that such an event would unfold, yet we remained uncertain about the specifics. However, the series delivered on its promise, presenting the storyline with panache. There could be no argument that this friendship has been irrevocably shattered.
One particularly memorable instance was observing how John provoked Jamie. Initially, Jamie was skeptical about the idea that John and Claire had shared a night together. As Jamie came to terms with this reality, his anger was primarily directed towards John rather than Claire. He found himself pondering the implications, given his knowledge of John’s preference for men. In a sense, it wasn’t surprising that John might find Jamie’s disbelief and subsequent comments offensive.
John’s final statement of not being sorry serves as a fitting conclusion. He was well aware of his actions, and in a sense, his desire to be punished reflects the remorse he feels for his actions and their consequences.
William turning to Claire for answers
It seems there’s an aspect of the show I find missing: the build-up of William and Claire’s relationship, as in the books they share a deeper bond with him referring to her as “Mother Claire.” Nevertheless, the scene where he sought answers from Claire was significant, and it’s heartening to see him recognize that she knows Jamie Fraser best.
What matters most to me is grasping the origins of his beliefs. I’m moved by his initial worry about whether he was conceived through rape or not. Although discovering he isn’t biologically related to Lord Ellesmere significantly impacts his life and status, there’s an additional depth of pain when learning one was conceived through rape, even if you were raised in a loving home. Claire helped him find peace regarding this issue.
Rachel realizing William’s paternity
William is justifiably upset that numerous individuals were aware of his biological father’s identity and failed to disclose it. What particularly strikes him isn’t just Young Ian’s secrecy, but rather how Rachel uncovered the truth ahead of William.
As a fan, I can relate to Rachel’s observation about the similarities between William and Jamie. It resonates with me because it feels so matter-of-fact, without any hint of judgment or disdain. What I admire about Rachel is her kindness and consideration – qualities that are evident in her acceptance of people as they are, even when their actions don’t align with her preferences. Her values guide her actions, fostering a worldview that embraces diversity and understanding.
Young Ian and Rachel’s looks at Jamie being alive
To this stage, Young Ian and Rachel assumed Jamie Fraser was deceased. They hadn’t communicated with Claire for a while because they sought out the Quakers to get married – unfortunately, it wasn’t possible! Consequently, they are unaware that Jamie Fraser is still alive and has returned.
In this pivotal scene, Jamie rides past while Young Ian and Rachel are captive. Their faces light up with surprise and joy upon seeing Jamie alive, yet both struggle to conceal their feelings. While Young Ian manages to keep his cool, Rachel’s emotions are evident on her face as she grapples with a whirlwind of feelings. It’s an incredibly heartwarming moment for them to realize Jamie is still among the living—the details can wait for later discussions! Their immediate priority, however, is to free Young Ian from the Redcoats first.
Denny helping Lord John Grey escape
Following Lord John Grey’s capture by the Rebels, it’s Denny Hunter – the camp physician – who attends to him. Finding Lord John in such a state leaves Denny quite shocked. Despite the circumstances, Denny cares for John kindly, expressing a desire that Claire was present instead. It’s after this incident that Denny distinguishes himself as an exceptional individual.
It transpires that John is scheduled for execution, regardless of whether he’s a spy or has committed any offenses. What truly concerns many Rebels is his last name – Grey. Denny can’t stand idly by and let this happen, so he proposes a means to save John. Although John refuses to endanger Denny, Denny reveals a path that could potentially save John’s life.
