As someone who’s grown up with the magic of Netflix streaming, it’s always a bittersweet moment when our beloved movies depart from the platform. September is no exception, as we bid farewell to some true gems – including the Divergent trilogy, A Walk to Remember, and The Breakfast Club.
Every month, it can be disappointing to see some well-loved movies depart from Netflix, only for a fresh batch of films to take their place the next month. As we move into September, several fan favorites will be saying goodbye, including two classic titles and two popular trilogies.
This month has witnessed a significant number of beloved series leaving Netflix, with shows like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “iZombie,” and “Jane the Virgin” already gone. By the end of the month, “Great News,” “Good Witch,” and “How to Get Away with Murder” will also bid farewell.
Wanting to catch up on your favorite film that’s about to disappear from Netflix? Here are four excellent movies (we’ve got a total of eight!) you might want to consider adding to your viewing queue before it’s too late!
The Divergent Series
Leaving Netflix: Sept. 30
If you need a quick fix of young adult dystopian adventure after watching the current No. 1 movie on Netflix Uglies, it’s your last opportunity to have a marathon of all three Divergent movies.
In the future city that resembles Chicago as depicted in Veronica Roth’s book series, Divergent, society has undergone significant transformations. People are divided into factions based on five primary virtues, but at 16 years old, they can choose to switch their faction. Tris (played by Shailene Woodley) makes a move and discovers she’s Divergent, which sets off a chain of events leading to a revolution.
Initially, plans called for creating four films, but ultimately, just three came to fruition: “Divergent”, “Insurgent”, and “Allegiant”. Catch the majority of their tale as it unfolds before leaving Netflix.
A Walk to Remember
Leaving Netflix: Sept. 24
Hey fellow tearjerker enthusiasts! Just a heads up – we’ve got only a few days left (until September 24th to be exact) to catch the heart-wrenching classic, “A Walk to Remember,” on Netflix before it bids adieu. So, let’s make this weekend one for emotional release as we gather around for our very own movie night with tissues at the ready!
The film “A Walk to Remember,” drawn from Nicholas Sparks’ book of the same title, showcases Mandy Moore and Shane West as Jamie Sullivan and Landon Carter, two high school students who, despite their distinct differences, are unexpectedly brought together. Over time, they find themselves falling in love; yet, Jamie’s health condition looms ominously over their blossoming romance, potentially shattering their love story before it has a chance to flourish.
More than two decades have passed since “A Walk to Remember” premiered in 2002, and yet it continues to tug at heartstrings as powerfully as ever. I dare anyone not to shed a tear or two during its poignant finale!
Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy
Leaving Netflix: Sept. 30
As a fan, I must admit, it’s with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, one of the three movie series parting ways from Netflix at the end of this month (and yes, Back to the Future is leaving too).
Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan play Ana and Christian Grey in the steamy, big-screen adaptation of E.L. James’ famous book series. These films were massive successes, narrating the complex and frequently dramatic love story between the two leads. Notably, these movies also delve into themes related to bondage.
If you’re a fan of this movie trilogy, don’t forget to catch up on Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed on Netflix before they disappear.
The Breakfast Club
Leaving Netflix: Sept. 30
On the last day of this month, one of August’s top-two re-runs will take you right back to the ’80s, a time when John Hughes’ films were shaping an entire teenage generation. Although it will return at some point in the future, “The Breakfast Club” will no longer be available on Netflix as of September 30th.
The movie The Breakfast Club focuses on five high school students who don’t know each other well, belonging to various social groups, finding themselves stuck in detention on a Saturday. To their initial dismay, it turns out to be a day filled with boredom, disagreements, self-discovery, and the formation of unexpected friendships. The cast includes Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Emilio Estevez in this iconic teen film.
This year marks four decades since the events depicted in “The Breakfast Club” transpired, with the film’s significant milestone being celebrated on March 24. Although the story is set in March 1984, it wasn’t until February 1985 that the movie was actually released. Consequently, the 40th anniversary of “The Breakfast Club” falls in March 2025.
