Malayalam cinema is back with a bang, offering fresh and enjoyable content! These are three movies you definitely want to watch on streaming platforms this week.

3 Malayalam movies to watch on OTT this week

1. L2: Empuraan

  • Cast: Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jerome Flynn, Rick Yune, Pranav Mohanlal
  • Where to watch: JioHotstar

Empuraan – Continuation of Lucifer, starring Mohanlal in the main character, is the second part of a three-part series called Lucifer. Directed by Prithviraj, this movie tells the story of Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Ab’raam Khureshi, picking up where 2019’s Lucifier left off.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself captivated by the central theme of this upcoming film – the triumph of an individual in the face of escalating threats on both local and global levels. What makes the story particularly intriguing is that it delves into the hero’s journey, making his victories over adversity the focal point. Intriguingly, a sequel titled L3 has been announced, promising to delve back into Stephen’s formative years during his teenage years.

2. Daveed

  • Cast: Antony Varghese Pepe, Lijomol Jose, Vijayaraghavan, Saiju Kurup, Kichu Tellus
  • Where to watch: ZEE5

Daveed centres around the narrative of Ashiq Abu, a mature bouncer who once was a boxer. His feud with Turkish boxer Sainul Akhmadov leads him to undertake a quest for self-renewal and perseverance.

The remaining part of the movie centers around Aashiq’s choice to stand up for honor and step into the ring, where he faces his own history simultaneously.

3. ED – Extra Decent

  • Cast: Suraj Venjaramoodu, Grace Antony, Shyam Mohan, Sudheer Karamana, Vinaya Prasad
  • Where to watch: Saina Play, ManoramaMax

Titled “Extra Decent,” this film, released in December 2024, is a dark comedy that Aamir Pallikkal directed. The narrative follows Binu, a character grappling with amnesia following the unfortunate accidental demise of his brother. Starring Suraj Venjaramoodu, it’s a compelling tale indeed.

As his relatives mock him for his perceived failings, the protagonist gradually uncovers hidden truths about his family lineage. This unfolds into an intricate storyline that interweaves themes of vengeance and atonement to form the basis of the narrative.
