As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of time-traveling games, I must admit that Roger’s predicament in Outlander season 7, episode 9, felt oddly familiar. The suspense of not knowing when or where he was, the panic of wondering about his own existence, and the intrigue of encountering characters from Jamie’s past – it all reminded me of those late-night sessions when I accidentally set my in-game clock back a century or two!
In the seventh season of Outlander, episode 9, it turned out that Roger had been mistaken about the year – he wasn’t actually in 1778. This surprise sparked some compelling developments for his character.
In the finale of Outlander season 7A, Roger and Buck stepped through the stones under the assumption they were arriving in 1778, as they believed Roger’s father, Roy, had taken young Jemmy through the stones for the gold that Jamie had concealed. However, it was revealed that they had not landed in the correct time period instead.
In simpler terms, going to Lallybroch helped Roger realize that he had made a huge mistake regarding the timeline. As for how this impacts Roger and Buck, it presents significant challenges, but before delving into those difficulties, let’s discuss some of Roger’s most memorable moments from the episode first.
Wondering about being born
What I found frustrating about Claire urging Jamie to delay his mission against Black Jack Randall for an entire year was that she never fully explained why it was crucial. At that moment, Claire thought Randall could be a direct ancestor of her husband-to-be, Frank. This meant if Randall were killed, Frank wouldn’t exist, and there would be a possibility that Claire might not survive the stones to reach Jamie. If Jamie had been aware of these implications, he might have appreciated Claire’s concern for their future together more deeply.
Indeed, Outlander addressed the issue slightly in Roger’s thoughts. With Buck appearing to suffer a potential heart attack and Roger grasping the situation was amiss, he pondered over its implications. Could it be possible that his existence would be altered if something untoward happened to Buck at this moment?
Since Buck’s wife has already given birth to a child who will continue Roger’s lineage, this raises the question of what happens when people die before their time. Buck brought this up, and Roger seemed unperturbed, but underneath, he appears to be deeply troubled with various thoughts swirling in his mind. I find it intriguing that he manages to keep a calm exterior while internally panicking.
Meeting Brian Fraser at Lallybroch
Roger believed that he was in 1778 all the way up to knocking on the front door of Lallybroch. When he saw the man in front of him, he called him Mr. Murray. You see, Roger naturally believed that he would meet Ian Murray, or at least maybe Jamie Murray. Roger has no idea what Ian and the rest of the Murray clan look like!
Firstly, Brian introduced himself. Overhearing Roger’s inner thoughts through a voiceover was engaging. It had me chuckling non-stop. The moment I heard “Brian Fraser”, it clicked that this must be Jamie’s father. This implied something wasn’t right; he wasn’t in the time period he believed he was in.
Roger must swiftly process information on the spot. In case he encounters Jenny and Ian, he can clearly elucidate matters as Jamie would have informed them about Roger and Bree prior. Meeting Brian much earlier in time necessitates Roger to concoct a tale about his identity and origins.
Seeing Geillis Duncan in Cranesmuir
In the ninth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, some recognizable characters returned, among them Geillis. I find it intriguing that Roger didn’t immediately grasp where he was when he took Buck to Geillis’s dwelling. He didn’t inquire about her name and might not have recognized the village. It’s plausible that he chose not to probe too deeply into the identity of the person Jenny Fraser directed him to.
Immediately upon the door being opened, Roger recognized the person before him. The woman’s demeanor and narration played a crucial role in this reveal. Though he struggles to maintain composure, Roger encounters a woman who has a history of murdering her husbands. This woman is also Buck’s mother and a direct ancestor of his, making the situation even more intricate.
As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to unravel more of their story. Given Roger’s extensive knowledge about Geillis, it’s plausible that she might recognize him despite not fully processing their encounter in 1968. With all the information he possesses, there are indeed compelling reasons for his memories of her to persist.
