As a seasoned gamer and a dedicated binge-watcher of medical dramas, I can confidently say that my heart skipped a beat when I stumbled upon Netflix’s Spanish gem, Breathless (Respira). Having traversed through the hallowed halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Grey’s Anatomy and the chaotic corridors of Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in The Resident, I was captivated by the authenticity and intensity that Valencia’s public hospital brought to the screen.
People generally dislike visiting real doctors, but strangely enough, many can’t seem to get enough of observing fictional medical professionals on TV. For years, medical drama series have held a prominent position on television screens, captivating audiences. These shows often depict the intense work environments of doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other critical workers, and there’s always an eager audience eager to watch.
In August 2024, Netflix debuted the Spanish medical drama series titled “Breathless,” or “Respira” as it is also known. This series was created by the minds behind the concluded teen thriller “Elite.” The story revolves around a public hospital in Valencia that undergoes transformations due to a prominent figure’s admission for treatment. Notable actors such as Blanca Suárez, Manu Rios, Najwa Nimri, Alfonso Bassave, and others make up the talented cast of “Breathless.
Similar to many medical drama shows, “Breathless” delves beyond just the intense, often nerve-wracking, life-and-death scenarios that occur within a hospital. It also encompasses romance, mystery, and political intrigue. After completing the eight episodes of its first season, are you seeking additional medical dramas to expand your viewing list? Here are three top-notch options available on Netflix!
Grey’s Anatomy
If you haven’t yet experienced the captivating world of “Grey’s Anatomy,” a hit ABC medical drama spanning many seasons, it would be a missed opportunity not to explore it, revisit it, or even get caught up after watching “Breathless.” Like its Spanish counterparts, this series is renowned for its daring storytelling on the small screen. This encompasses its romantic scenes, both dreamy and steamy (with or without the Mc), as well as its heart-wrenching character departures.
Originally airing in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy continues to captivate audiences with over 400 episodes under its belt. The show’s historic 21st season will debut on ABC on September 26, and it’ll likely find a home on Netflix sometime in 2025 following the anticipated climax of its final season. Despite the comings and goings of cast members over the years, the essence of Grey’s Anatomy remains consistent across seasons, decades, and episodes. With 20 seasons available on Netflix, don’t miss out on this enduring pop culture icon.
The Resident
Just like how Breathless exposed the inner workings of a police station, The Resident, an addictive medical drama I’ve been hooked on for six seasons, doesn’t shy away from shedding light on the complexities of the healthcare system. In this gripping tale spanning over 100 episodes, Matt Czuchry, known for his roles in Gilmore Girls and The Good Wife, plays the relentless resident Conrad Hawkins, who employs unorthodox methods to navigate the challenging world of medicine. Alongside him, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal, Bruce Greenwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, and others lend their talents to this compelling series.
Initially debuting on Fox in 2018 and concluding after six seasons in 2023, “The Resident” gained renewed interest when it became available on Netflix in early 2024. Thanks to the broad reach of this streaming platform, many people who might have overlooked it before now have a chance to catch up. If you haven’t had a chance to see “The Resident,” be sure to give it a watch!
New Amsterdam
One of the shows widely loved by audiences, which initially aired on NBC and gained prominence on Netflix, is New Amsterdam, premiering in 2018 and concluding in 2023, much like The Resident. Interestingly, New Amsterdam, an NBC medical drama, only lasted for five seasons and produced fewer than 90 episodes, making it the briefest binge-watch on this list, apart from the newer series Breathless. The story unfolds at a public hospital in New York City, where the determined Dr. Max Goodwin (played by Ryan Eggold) strives to revamp the hospital’s healthcare methods.
Despite only being moderately successful during its broadcast on NBC, New Amsterdam unexpectedly climbed into the top 10 shows on Netflix. All five seasons are currently streaming on the platform, and its popularity has prompted NBC to consider creating a spinoff focusing on Max’s daughter Luna. Each medical drama carries an undercurrent of inspiration in its storylines, but New Amsterdam may just be the most emotionally moving one out there.
If you loved watching Breathless on Netflix, you can’t go wrong with making either Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident, or New Amsterdam your next binge-watch!
