As a seasoned gamer who’s survived countless zombie apocalypses in video games, the news of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later wrapping production has me more excited than a kid on Christmas morning! I mean, who wouldn’t be thrilled about a new installment in one of the most terrifying post-apocalyptic film series?
It’s been announced that production on the long-awaited sequel, titled “28 Years Later”, to the films “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later”, has concluded. Renowned director Danny Boyle, who helmed the original film and served as an executive producer on the second, is back in the director’s chair for this new installment. Cillian Murphy, who won an Academy Award for his performance as the lead character in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, is also back to reprise his role from the first movie within this post-apocalyptic film series, playing Jim once more.
Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later wraps production
On Monday, July 29th, it was announced that filming for Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” had concluded. Filming for the movie started in May 2024, with scenes being shot in different locations across the UK, such as London, Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, Kielder Forest in Hexham, and Priddy in Somerset.
Together with Boyle and Murphy, as well as rejoining as a co-screenwriter from the original movie and an executive producer for the sequel, Alex Garland contributed to writing the script for “28 Years Later.”
Discussions about the third movie have been ongoing since 2007, but its production was continually postponed. However, the project finally began development in January 2024, with Eddie Murphy as one of the main cast members. Also joining him in “28 Years Later” are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. The movie is scheduled to hit US theaters on June 20, 2025.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the franchise is set to expand beyond 28 Years Later, with a new trilogy on the horizon! While Danny Boyle won’t be directing the upcoming sequels, it’s exciting to know that Alex Garland, the mastermind behind the original, will pen and produce the next two films.
