In a recent conversation, screenwriter and director Alex Garland discussed the roots of the agile zombies in the movies 28 Days Later and their subsequent installments, revealing how the Resident Evil video game has played a role in shaping the film series. It’s worth noting that Garland wrote the screenplay for both the original 28 Days Later and its upcoming sequels: 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
Alex Garland says the ‘quick zombies’ in 28 Days Later came from Resident Evil
In his latest conversation with GQ, screenwriter and filmmaker Alex Garland reminisced about some of his most impactful projects, starting with his debut as a screenwriter – the film “28 Days Later”. He admitted that the swift zombies in this movie were modeled after the rapid canines from Resident Evil.
In the interview, Garland reminisced about a nation he’d previously visited that was enduring severe struggles. Upon returning to England, he felt irritated by the country’s lack of urgency. He aimed to introduce those hardships into England. Later, he shared how Resident Evil served as inspiration for his screenplay.
Before penning “28 Days Later…”, Garland mentioned there was a PlayStation game called Resident Evil. He recollected that this game sparked his fondness for zombie films, something he hadn’t felt in a while. While playing, he noticed the zombies moved sluggishly, making it simple to eliminate them or escape with a casual stroll.
Garland went on to say, “However, it was the swift-moving dogs in the game that caught my attention. Occasionally, they would startle me, and this is what sparked the concept for a fast-paced zombie film.
Significantly, the film “28 Years Later” is scheduled for release on June 20, 2025, while its sequel, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” is slated for a 2026 premiere.
