'20 years earlier, the situation was much better': Nani says he is scared to use social media amid Hema Committee report

As a fervent fan, I find myself deeply moved by Nani’s poignant words regarding the state of women’s safety and respect in the film industry, as well as society at large. His personal experiences, coupled with his interactions with children who are more aware than many adults, serve to underscore the urgency of change.

Speaking to NDTV, the charismatic actor Nani, known for his upcoming movie Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, shares his thoughts on the Hema Committee report and recent controversies in Malayalam cinema. In an interview, he admitted that he’s now apprehensive about browsing online today.

Regarding women’s issues and their ongoing struggles, the actor voiced her concern, “The Nirbhaya case still haunts me. It never seems to end, constantly troubling us. I find myself anxious even while browsing through Twitter or similar platforms. As I scroll, disturbing images or news can pop up, affecting my mood for the rest of the day.”

The performer expressed that our current era is marked by a surge in social media usage, with nearly everyone participating and engaging in numerous activities. Upon learning about the various issues, particularly those concerning the mistreatment of women and the freedom some people have to make harmful statements or actions without consequences, he feels deeply troubled.

The actor continued by saying, “I believe our circumstances now are the most challenging… Looking back, things were far more favorable 20 years ago. And if you go even further back, they were even better then. It seems to me that we find ourselves in the least desirable state.”

Beyond this, Nani further mentioned that due to his job and lifestyle, he frequently engages with kids. Through these encounters, he’s observed that today’s children are more informed about various things compared to what he was aware of at his age. Expressing admiration for their intelligence, he anticipates a brighter future than the present state.

A recently released Hema Committee report sheds light on alarming aspects of the Malayalam film industry, revealing a grim scenario for women involved. The 235-page redacted document reportedly includes numerous instances of sexual harassment, unfair treatment towards women, and exploitation in the work environment.
