You might be looking for strategies on how to beat The First Berserker: Khazan, given that the game can be quite challenging. Although it’s not as difficult as Sekiro or some of Elden Ring’s more demanding areas, it does present its own set of challenges due to its bosses being quite tough and healing resources being limited. To overcome these bosses effectively, you’ll need to carefully plan your strategy for each encounter.
In Khazan, there isn’t much room for mistakes, but once you dive in, you’ll soon realize the richness of its boss battles and the satisfying feeling of success when you apply a strategy to overcome a challenging opponent. Here are some tips to guide you through the game, particularly during the initial stages as you figure out the mechanics.
Khazan has tough battles, but once you start playing, you’ll notice how deep they are and how good it feels when you use a strategy to beat a difficult enemy. Here are some tips to help you understand and play the game better at the beginning.
Keep an eye on stamina and don’t neglect skills
In Khazan, Stamina serves as your primary asset. You employ it for attacking, defending, and dodging. However, executing a brink guard, or what the game refers to as a perfect parry, will deplete some of your stamina. If you exhaust it, you’ll be left temporarily stunned, giving the boss you’re fighting an opportunity to unleash its full force. Certain bosses have attacks that can drain your entire stamina bar in one go if you try to block them, so it’s best to steer clear of these altogether. Don’t forget that you can also use Vitality Spheres to temporarily boost your stamina when needed.
As a fan who’s often faced with tanky bosses, I’ve found that skills can be my secret weapon when my stamina is limited. Since they don’t drain stamina, they allow me to deal more damage or even use them instead of a dodge or guard, making them more effective. The key is to keep attacking and defending to build up spirit which I can then spend on skills during the battle.
After choosing your preferred weapon, examine your skill progression to figure out the most effective ways to link your attacks with skills. In essence, Khazan operates much like a fighting game in terms of combining moves, and mastering this technique significantly enhances your ability to deal damage with tough adversaries.
Grab Netherworld Energy to buff your healing
In the intricate world of Khazan, one challenge lies in its restricted healing mechanism. Initially, you can only use three units of Netherworld Energy whenever you take a break at a Blade Nexus during gameplay, but additional energy can be discovered throughout each mission as you explore. The initial supply of this energy is located within the Embars Ruins (the third mission), specifically in the hallway with the large suspended creature, immediately after you enter it.
Upstairs, to my right on the next level, I found a fellow gamer strumming a lute, the sweet melody echoing through the air as I approached. Climbing the stairs, making a right turn, and dropping down to his level, I managed to snatch a radiant, golden item – earning myself some precious Netherworld Energy in the process.
In the Strange Stench mission, another gold-glowing item can be found at the peak of the scaffolding in Skoffa Cave. While navigating wooden beams and dealing with bat attacks near the cave’s entrance, keep an eye out for this item at the topmost point of the structure, similar to the one encountered earlier.
Don’t neglect your javelin ability
In Khazan, Javelin proves particularly powerful, especially when combating ranged adversaries. It’s a great tool for eliminating bothersome archers, sparing you from being shot at while engaging other opponents. Additionally, you can utilize it to bring down hanging structures on top of monsters, reach and destroy unattainable soulstones, and even during specific boss encounters. I strongly advise picking up the Rest in Peace upgrade; this will prevent any skeleton enemies slain with javelin from resurrecting, which is incredibly beneficial against those archers that fire frost, who can come back to life even if you manage to kill them initially.
Experiment with your build
In Khazan, Khazan offers free skill resets at any time, allowing you to adjust your strategies when a boss proves challenging. This means you can switch things around and try out different approaches. You might even want to change weapons, as Khazan’s variety is quite extensive with the right skills. Many bosses in Khazan seem difficult because they encourage you to learn and master systems that you may not have used much before. Therefore, it’s essential to think strategically about each boss and devise a plan to defeat them, rather than relying solely on a powerful build.
Guard regular attacks but dodge elemental ones
One thing you’ll pick up from supervisors swiftly is to steer clear of shielding against elemental assaults. Just like other games such as Elden Ring, elemental harm can permeate your defense and initiate a status effect, such as fire, poison, or contagion. You could consume an item to purge these effects or boost your resistance, but honestly, it’s more practical to simply identify which boss attacks are elemental and dodge them instead.
In the game Khazan, it’s straightforward to discern the patterns of the bosses because they consistently follow certain rules. For example, Volbaino inflicts fire damage when he strikes you with his flaming nail, while Shacktuka develops plague upon biting or licking its paw and swiping at you. Knowing which attacks to dodge and which to block is crucial in this game, particularly if you’re not a player who excels at deflection and counterattacks, able to defeat the bosses before they launch their moves.
Use the resistance accessories you find in each area
In addition to snacking on resistance-boosting items, you might also want to consider enhancing your resistances by using accessories. This is particularly crucial during your mission adventures as you’ll often discover a specific set of accessories that boost the resistance needed for the upcoming boss. For example, in the Skoffa Cave within the Strange Smell mission, you can find the Necklace of Sealed Venom and the Ringed of Sealed Venom, which provide poison resistance.
Craft consumables at the blacksmith to give you a buff in bosses
After you open the blacksmith, you can finally utilize your gathered Transmutation Shards and Spirit Orbs to manufacture useful items. Simply choose ‘craft’ with the blacksmith, then navigate to the far-right section, indicated by a small potion bottle, to view the tab for crafting consumables.
In this game, you can create cleanses to get rid of statuses, resistance items for elements, and enhancers that make your weapon elemental. With tough bosses like these, it’s nearly essential to use enhancers to boost your damage and discover the boss’s vulnerability. This will significantly shorten each boss battle. To access more recipes for consumables, you’ll need to accomplish additional training objectives in Daphrona’s Codex.
Don’t forget about Daphrona
In the Embars Ruins, you’ll encounter a character from the underworld who possesses several useful abilities. She can activate any soulstones found, granting ongoing bonuses, enhance your Spirit of Advocacy (which serves as a boss summon if desired), and she provides exceptional Training Grounds where you can hone your skills against various enemy types.
Daphrona’s Codex stands out as something to focus on. It’s not just a catalog of opponents; it offers incentives for accomplishing minor combat tasks against enemies. These achievements reward you with useful items such as consumables, equipment, and even recipes for crafting them with the blacksmith.
Try using deflection on the most predictable boss attacks
Mastering both counterattacks – perfectly timed parries against an unblockable red attack and deflections against regular attacks – can be challenging, but when executed successfully, they inflict significant stamina damage on a boss or foe. Instead of attempting to parry every single attack as in Dark Souls, bear in mind that not all attacks are suitable for a parry.
When engaging each boss and trying out different tactics, seek instances where a defensive block (parry) could be beneficial, and integrate it into your approach. Typically, if a boss’s attacks are slow or their rhythm is predictable, you can successfully block them with a deflection. Mastering this timing will provide you with a reliable edge when attempting to defeat that boss.
Grab the Coward’s Lantern from Danjin
Enemies that are invisible can be quite frustrating, don’t they? In Khazan, these sneaky adversaries take the shape of assassin-like skeletons, popping up in specific zones during mid-game and beyond. Though you can trace their footsteps as they roam, a reliable defense comes in the form of the Coward’s Lantern. You can obtain this item from Danjin, a character with a jar for a head, within the Cradle of Jars side mission. Completing this bonus mission not only grants you access to Danjin as a vendor in The Crevice but also rewards you with various cannabis-themed cosmetics as you find his pots scattered throughout the game.
