10 Best Kannada movies of 2024 POLL: Bagheera, Bhairathi Ranagal, UI and more

2024, oh boy! What a rollercoaster of emotions that year was for me as a Kannada cinema enthusiast. I’ve been following the industry since the days of Vishnuvardhan and Rajkumar, so I can truly say I’ve seen it all.

2024 marked a fantastic year for cinema, showcasing exceptional films from various linguistic regions in the country. In the realm of Kannada cinema specifically, numerous films made significant strides and left viewers captivated.

Initially, two films – Upadhyaksha starring Yuva Rajkumar and Diganth’s Bachelor Party – were released on Republic Day, causing a box office clash. However, both movies garnered favorable criticism from critics.

In the Kannada film industry, the following movie that was released was titled “Karataka Damanaka,” starring Shiva Rajkumar alongside Prabhu Deva. This action-drama represented Prabhu Deva’s return to the Sandalwood screens after an absence of 17 years. The film received a somewhat average response from viewers.

In the same month, Yuva Rajkumar opted to debut his upcoming venture, titled Yuva, which ultimately became the sixth highest-earning Kannada movie of the year 2024.

Subsequently, in August, there were two significant film premieres in the Kannada cinema world, which coincidentally came out within a week of each other.

Initially scheduled for release in April 2022, the film “Bheema,” directed by Vijay Kumar and starring Duniya Vijay as the main character, became the first to join the league. However, its release was eventually moved from April 2022 to August 2024.

Initially, the movie received both positive and negative evaluations from critics, yet it proved profitable at the box office. At first, earnings for Bheema were slow, but they swiftly increased to a decent amount eventually.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t resist delving into the delightful world of “Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi,” a playful romantic comedy that had me hooked from start to finish. Interestingly enough, it debuted alongside other grandiose and high-budget films on Independence Day. Despite this stiff competition, it managed to pull in modest earnings initially but ultimately proved itself as a commercial triumph.

In September, no other Kannada film was released, and the performance in October was somewhat inconsistent.

To start off, I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by my initial experience with Dhruva Sarja’s film, Martin. Although it sparked great anticipation, it fell short of meeting the expectations set for it.

Nonetheless, Sriimurali’s portrayal of Bagheera stood out remarkably, setting a new standard with its impressive global box office revenue.

Coming up next was Shiva Rajkumar’s outstanding portrayal in the neo-noir action drama “Bhairathi Ranagal“. This production served as a prequel to the 2017 film “Mufti” and proved to be a resounding success at the box office, receiving rave reviews from viewers upon its release.

The year closed with Upendra’s highly-anticipated dystopian science fiction UI.
