Amazon has proposed a spin-off centered around the character Miss Moneypenny, who is usually associated with James Bond. However, it remains uncertain whether this project will actually be produced.
It’s said that James Bond producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, disclosed their intention to sell the franchise to Amazon, only a few days prior to the Academy’s tribute showcasing six minutes of James Bond’s legendary theme songs on stage.
Could the Moneypenny James Bond spin-off show still happen?
It’s said that Amazon proposed a television show about the Moneypenny character to Broccoli, but both Broccoli and Wilson declined due to differing visions for their father’s legacy and a long-standing agreement with MGM that gives them creative control over all things Bond. Even Warner Bros.’ Courtenay Valenti, whom Broccoli reportedly favored, couldn’t persuade them to consider the Moneypenny series idea. (The Hollywood Reporter reports this information.)
In 2022, Amazon took over MGM, the long-time home of the famous franchise. This move gives them liberty to develop spin-offs based on the iconic series. With the half-siblings out of the picture, Amazon now has a wide range of potential ideas for new series. It’s not implausible that a Moneypenny spin-off could become a reality in the future.
Although Broccoli and Wilson were unenthusiastic about the Moneypenny spin-off concept, Amazon has been granted control over the franchise. However, according to John Cork, author of James Bond Encyclopedia (as reported by THR), Amazon might require individuals who possess a deep understanding of the character similar to Broccoli and Wilson’s level to be involved in the decision-making process.
The James Bond series, inspired by a character penned by Ian Fleming, has produced multiple films, beginning with Dr. No in 1962 starring Sean Connery. Over the years, Connery played the leading role of the secret agent in six additional Bond movies: From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Never Say Never Again (1983).
George Lazenby portrayed the lead character of James Bond for a brief period, appearing in just one film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, in 1969. Following him, Roger Moore assumed the role from 1973 to 1985. Subsequently, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond in subsequent adaptations. Daniel Craig is the most recent actor to portray the legendary 007; No Time to Die, released in 2021, marks his final appearance as James Bond at this point.
