Joining the crypto circus alongside the likes of Revolut and PayPal, Bank of America (BofA) is all set to unveil its very own stablecoin, assuming the regulatory gods smile upon them.
In a chat with the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., as reported by Fortune, BofA’s head honcho, Brian Moynihan, waxed lyrical about the digital revolution and the stablecoin’s potential to mimic traditional financial wizardry.
Brian mused that stablecoins could become the banking world’s new BFF, fully supported by Uncle Sam’s greenbacks and linked to your average deposit account. Imagine a world where digital and traditional money high-five each other in seamless transactions!
“If the law says it’s cool, we’re totally doing this,” he declared, blaming the last administration’s no-fun policy for the delay. But now, with a more crypto-friendly government, the big banks are poised to dive into the digital deep end.
Despite the shiny allure of other digital assets, Brian’s heart belongs to stablecoins. He’s convinced they’re the perfect fit for our current financial jigsaw puzzle. This is quite the pivot from 2022 when BofA was all, “Crypto? Not so fast.”
Ironically, while BofA hasn’t quite embraced stablecoins yet, they’re already swimming in digital dough, with a cool $3 trillion zipping through wires daily. Brian noted that cash is so last season, but hey, ATMs and branches are still a thing.
And let’s not forget the bank’s techsploration – a cool $4 billion annually on innovation and another $8–9 billion on keeping the digital gears turning. They even had an iPhone app before it was cool. Today, 90% of customer interactions are digital, thanks to AI helpers like Erica.
But Brian insists there’s still a place for good old human interaction in banking. With 3,700 branches, BofA is keeping it real for those who prefer a face-to-face money chat.
